Hi guys!

Ive been looking around on the internet to see which drivers work best with Windows 7 and it seems like 185.85 seems to be the best. But i was wondering as the post i found was from 2009, is there any of the new drivers working better with windows 7? I did see that 314.22 worked for some.

Anyway thanks for the help,

Cheers

My missus has a 9800GT and it runs everything as good as could be with 314.22 drivers. Even with my GTX 560 i run the same driver's. No point in going with the latest unless there is some fix for certain games and your model of card. This is really all they bring new drivers out for fixing game bugs and making newer cards more compatible.

The reason I am asking, is because with the 9800GT it has problems running windows 7, especially when playing games, it will just freeze with multiple colors on the screen and then the only way to get it back is to do a reset.

I tried the 327.23 driver which is the latest and it didn't fix the problem, also I tried 314.22 but had no luck.

Has anyone else had any problems on this forum with windows 7 and a 9800GT graphics card?

I had 2 9800GT GigaByte 1Gb slients until recently when one of them was RA, repaired failed again and was deemed unrepairable and replaced at my request with a Radeon HD6670 2 gb card. This at 3 years old, talk about standing behind a product. Anyway to answer your question the other board is still in daily use working perfectly. You could clean dust out of the fan using some compressed air and if you know how dismantle the heatsink from the GPU and very carefully clean off and replace the heatsink compound. It is either overheating or it is dying. Use GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility and report the temps on idle and gaming.
Good Luck. Tony

Hi Tony,

Here are the screenshots from GPU-Z. I also used FurMark for the Game test as ive just recently installed Windows XP and not installed any games at the moment.

Well it is not overheating so far so I would suspect 2 possibilities. It is dying or the PSU is unable to supply the voltages or current required. Is it still under warranty? The video card does not report a fan speed, is it a fanless design? If not is the fan rotating? What is the Make and model of the unit other than 9800GT Gigabyte, Asus, etc. Fill in your system specs.

The card does have a fan on it, and it does spin, just doesn't give me any information on it. Ive always installed CPUID Hardware Monitor and got these readings below:

2uqkr9t.jpg

I didn't like the look of the +12V reading so I went into BIOS and checked it there and it was just over 12 so that seemed fine.

Cheers

15 v on the 12 rail is what I get on my machine too. That is some error in the program or the chip that reports data to the program. The power supply is a few years old, a no name brand of questionable quality. I would get another 600w Corsair, Enermax Silverstone etc. Enermax have a 5 year warranty on most of their PSU's. It could still be the video card but I feel you should replace your power supply first as I have explained. Seen plenty of poor PSU's wreck hard drives, video cards and CPU's with there dying days.

You do have a failed PSU. In BIOS it has very little load but in Windows it is loaded and as shown drops below 12V.It is running at only 79% of what it should. Also it has 2 12V rails with a 20A and .6A rating, your 9800GT requires 33W minimum.

I would replace both the GPU and PSU, the GPU is 5 years old. The 9800GT has no problems with w7 but I'm sure it does with modern games.

A bad PSU will cause other components to fail, as Tony said. They will try to run at higher volts and current which the PSU can't supply causing intermittent over heating.

Try HWinfo as a 2nd opinion for voltages, scroll down to the buttons that say Download Installer for you bit version.
http://www.hwinfo.com/download.php

Here is mine, I have a 650Ti GPU. This is running Furmark at 1920x1080, the 12V drops to 11.904 but the max column shows 12.192V which is with Windows and 5 IE10 tabs open. Both are within +/-5% of 12V, which is what you want.
