Welcome to Seven Forums Ukdodger. AutoCad 2004 is considered quite old, and many old programs will not run on newer operating systems. Even AutoCAD 2007 required a service pack just to run on Windows Vista. If you had Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise, you could try to run in in XP mode.

In searching about running it in a virtual machine I see that AutoCAD is not a good candidate for virtualization. The virtual machine does not use the GPU in the physical machine. It uses a built-in emulated graphics card, which is not a high performance unit.

I see where some have been able to run it, some only on 32 bit machines, and some with buggy performance. Truth be told, it is just too old to run natively. Hopefully someone better versed in virtual machines can pipe in. A Guy

Thanks A Guy. Obviously you know what you are talking about. I had a feeling it might have something to do with the 32bit/64bit thing. I was hoping for a workaround. Looks like I'll have to buy a new version of AutoCad. They are really expensive but then they are really clever. Thanks again.

Hi Alonso. The answer is nothing at all. It installs successfully but attempting to run it does nothing. I've tried executing the file without the shortcut with the same result.

Dont know how to use XP Compatibility Mode?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your help. I checked the Window site and no W7 cant be run in Compatibility mode. I dont fancy the Longbow option. Not sure I trust it enough to fork out the price. But if nothing else I've got some useful links. I'm going to take the hit and buy new. Cheers

Autocad 2004 & Inventor 8 are my favorites and I tried installing them on my Laptop W7 64bit. They both installed fine and Autocad 2004 ran smooth as silk, compatibility mode on or off, no difference, just fine. My trouble was with Inventor 8, It opened but wouldn't run and locked up. I ousted W7 64bit & installed XP64, now Inventor runs great too.

Next the hotrod desktop computer. Gave up trying to install XP64bit onto the SSD, I5, 32gig ram machine. Popped W7 64bit on it, then a V-Box, then XP64bit and my Autocad 2004 & Inventor 8.

I'm just not a fan of the new Inventor 2014's hogging the resources. The old simple software from a decade ago really flys with this new hardware. Wish there was a true XP mode in W7, or W8, 9 etc.

I'm amazed Scott. I tried several times as did a lot of others if you surf the net. The symptom was always the same. It instals but wont boot up. Interesting.

I use Autocad 2002 daily on Windows 7 Pro x64. I like my old and heavily customized version. It runs fast, smoothly, and doesn't phone home. I have a copy of Autocad 2012, but it's a PIA compared to the old version, an I've uninstalled it.

Autocad 2002 installed without a glitch, and I updated it to the SP-1 version without issue.
