Blank Screen at start of installation

Hi

I was wondering if you could help me. I have a Acer laptop that is currently running build 7068 (specs available at the side there for full info). Since build 7000 I have been doing update installs, which have worked find (save a few glitches here and there), and I wanted to do a clean install of build 7100. However, when i boot from CD or USB pen, as soon as the Windows Logo disappears, the mouse cursor appears for a second (against a black screen), and then all I get is a completely blank screen, no disc accesses, CD accesses, nothing.

If I do the install from within Windows (again a clean install), the files copy across okay, but as soon as it rebooots during expanding, I get the same again, a blank screen and nada!!!!

I'm not sure if it's the graphics card at fault, or what, but surely if the beta build had enough drivers, this should. Could anyone suggest anything that may help?

Thank you.

It sounds like you may have a corrupted image. You might try a different .iso or burn the one you have at a lower speed on a new DVD. Good luck.

Hi

Thanks for your help, I forgot to mention I've tried two different images from two different sources, and both have the same problem unfortunately.

That's a problem. I have had an error at that time in installation, but not a blank screen. I hope someone who has solved this problem can help you. Sorry.

Yeah, at least if there was some text or soemthing I could at least try and fix it, but without anything, it's a no go.

I figured it out, and thought I'd let you all know in case anyone else has this issue. It was my keyboard, I had an external one connected which must have been malfunctioning or something, as once I disconnected it, I was in business, and everything went smoothly.

Help. I have the same problem. Windows 7 installs and goes to load up the final screen, then it says shutdown and that is that. It boots up again and I only see a black screen with the cursor in the top left. I have waited and it stays like it. I have tried everything.

I have reduced two monitors down to one. I have unplugged all usb devices. I have tried booting in safe mode.

I have just realised that my mouse is USB. Could this be the problem? Also I have been told on another site that my recovery partition is causing the problem. Any ideas?

By the way I have an Acer 5920 G, Vista 32 (I want to dual boot win7) and an ATI Radeon HD 3470 256mb.

You didnt say if yopu were able to boot into safe mode. If you can could you go into event viewer and go to windoes log >app tab and look for errors relating to the problem. If not have you tried a repair install?

Hi,

No I cannot go into safe mode. You mean into Windows 7 safe mode? No I can't do that during the installion process obviously and certainly not after it has installed as I just get the black screen and cannot get any boot options. I'm not sure what a repair install is but I think I may have tried it. Hmm how do I do that if not? I expect it won't work.

Thanks zigzag

CAn you boot from the win 7 dvd? If so you could do a repair, or a clean re-install

JZ, not so obvious. If you hit F8 when asked to press a key to but from DVD (I usually hold it just in case) it will start the installation in safe mode. It will show you the drivers' names as they load and you can see where it stops. Big chances it is at the next one to disk.sys (usualy classpnp.sys, but you can't actually see it).
In the safe mode otions you can also choose to write a dump file. If your installation goes far enough it might generate one and there are people here that can interpret those very well and help further.
The repair install will work if you have installed Win7 (or sometimes gone far enough in the install process). When you start the Win7 install it will ask you to do a repair, or you can choose it from the options on the first screen. Again, if you can get there.

Johnny, are you trying a clean install or an upgrade?
And yes, the USB mouse can cause trouble, this weekend I had a similar problem. It was stuck at a background screen with the pointer and nothing else. I replaced with a PS2 mouse and still had to wait at least half an hour (how long have you waited?) until something happened. But then it went on.

Clean reinstall only. I do not want to upgrade. My clean install attempts do not work. I'm just trying to figure out what the other posts are saying at the moment. Actually I think I waited about 20 minutes on the black screen. You think it might actually go on to load? Some people are saying it stays permanently like it. I didn't realise the mouse could cause trouble. It all sounds ridiculous to me. I'll try to work out this dump file stuff and get back to you. Last time I tried to install it wouldn't let me install in safe mode.

Thanks guys.

I have had both situations. ONce when Win7 wouldn't install because of my processor, it stayed at the logo screen forever (well, at least 24 hours).
Then installing on a different computer, it took a somewhat long time but it did go on. From what I have read, it is not predictable.
Yes, it is annoying. I am hoping they fixed it in the final version.

Hello well I guess you mean pressing f8 after the boot from disc option (pressing f8 during didn't work) and I have tried booting all the way in safe mode which doesn't work. I got a list of files yes when it tried to boot it up as far as possible in safe mode.

mvp.sys (or is it mup)
then
hwpolicy.sys
fvevol.sys
disk.sys
classpnp.sys

This is as far as it gets.

As to creating a dump file, I saw no option for that whatsoever and I wouldn't know how else to make one. Doing a repair didn't work either, even at the latest stage of the installation. I also unplugged every device including my mouse. I still get the welcome then suddenly the shutdown and from then on black screen with cursor.

Hi JZ, you did what I meant, thanks. You won't be able to create a dmp file, the installation does not go far enough for that. You seem to have a classpnp.sys problem, which is bad news. It is usually finicky. It should be related to hardware access. Can you go into Vista and update your BIOS (or via any BIOS update tool)? Latest from Acer is 3813 please check if your is outdated then check here: Step5

Miond their warning, it is for real: Flashing the wrong BIOS can cause harm to the system. Acer recommends that you should only upgrade your firmware/drivers if you have been instructed to do so by an Acer Customer Care representative. By using these firmware/drivers you agree to accept the possibility of product failure.

Please ask for help if unsure.
Our network is a pain today, I don't know if I will be able to post anymore until the afternoon.

Really appreciate your time here :) Well my bios is V1.3811, 3/14/2008. So I guess i'm out of date. Bit scared to touch the bios though! Will it be ok?

I hear so many bad things about it and don't know how to do it safely.

By the way is my laptop 32bit or 64bit?
