Hi.

I want to format this 4tb sata hard disk drive into one or two partitions so can my wd tv live gen2 media player recognize it but it must formatted as MBR AND NOT AS GPT.

So is there any way to formatted into one and only Master Boot Partition at mbr and cluster size like 4k(Or something else) so it can recognize by any device i connect that hard disk drive(Media player, windows7 e.t.c.)

A LOT OF THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND YOUR HELP.

Hi there
Please explain why it MUST be an MBR and not a GPT drive .

If it's NOT the boot drive you don't have to have an EFI BIOS (UEFI) to use a GPT drive.

Unless you have special software the max size an MBR disk can be is 2.2TB

Once the disk is formatted (NTFS) standard programs will simply recognize it as a normal disk -- you can partition it into smaller partitions too.

So I'm confused as to why it MUST be an MBR Disk. !!!

Cheers

Hi there
How would it know

- the HD TV is just reading DATA - the partition design isn't of concern to application programs. It just wants to access the directories.

You can test it with another drive -- for example just convert an external USB drive to GPT and see if the application can access it.

Already test that if i format the 4tb hdd as gpt the wd hd tv gen2 DOESN'T SHOW IT AT ALL/IT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT so....

I must format it ONLY AT MBR on one or two partitions but as mbr.

I think update the firmware will be better because this is the problem of the equipment.

The Data is damaged or corrupted after connecting a drive greater than 2 TB to a WD TV Live (WDBAAx0000NBK), Live Plus, or Live Hub

may help you

ALREADY have installed the latest firmware for that media player with any chance....

And as i tallied it is the wd hd tv gen2 NOT the wd hd tv live so.....

And i ALREADY tallied you that it doesn't see the 4tb hard disk at all not it see it and make the files corrupted so......

Then may be your equipment is too old.(in 2009 http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=1004&lang=en).What you can is to partition your 4tb into 2
For Seagate you can use Seagate DiscWizard to use another 2tb, but WD I don't know.
However, you can use the software.“Acronis True Image 2014”

Acronis Extended Capacity Manager
The Acronis Extended Capacity Manager allows your operating system support large capacity disks with the MBR partition style. You are able to use the disk space beyond 2 TB. This free space will be recognized as a separate disk, and will be usable by your operating system and applications as if it was a regular physical hard disk.
Acronis Extended Capacity Manager wizard displays all hard disks larger than 2 TB (unallocated or with MBR partition style). You can see the disk space which Windows recognizes and allocates. This space is called Windows Native Capacity in the wizard.

You may try it, but I don't

By the way, does the equipment support the linux format such as ext4? you can try it.

And about 4K,
as of October 2013, there are still no 4K native hard drives available on the market, and all Advanced Format devices are utilizing the 512e emulation instead.
You can see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Format
So you cannot format in one partition by MBR

Ps: I am sorry because I cannot distinguish the 2'nd Gen WD TV Live and wd hd tv gen2

the maximum partition size is up to the sector size
for example, a sector size of 512 bytes:=2^32x512 = 2TB
But a sector size of 4096 bytes: =2^32x4096 = 16TB
That's why he says 4096 bytes. But in windows, I don't know how to do that but using Acronis as above thread.

I tell from the BEGGINNING that i have old wd media player.
And that maybe needed to split the 4tb hard disk into 2 mbr partitions of 2tb each partition

If i choose the mbr ntfs with cluster 64 what is the size limit for each partition?

I try to format this 4tb hard disk into mbr and it see ONLY 2TB of hard disk the other 2tb don't see it anywhere to format it as a secont partition of the hard disk.

What i do wrong?

From the acronis disc image 11 as mbr it see ONLY one partition of 2tb and not the other 2tb to make it as two mbr partitions.

As win7 onboard program it see it like this
image.png

and i can format ONLY the first 2tb partition NOT the other 1.678,02tb partition.

Why is that happening?

So you cannot format in one partition by MBR

So not to mention the 64k native hard drives, then 2tb is too for the cluster 64k because
512e emulation
and
no 4K native hard drives available on the market

You see the 64k because it groups the 512x128.

And when you plug the hard disk, the first thing is to affirm GPT or MBR, then you format to 4k, 8k,16k.

For example, this is my disk and it is latest. I have 4K but the HD tune shows like below:
Ashampoo_Snap_20131130_21h52m05s_001_HDTunePro5-00-HardDiskUtility.jpg

And if it shows 4k or more (no 4K native hard drives available on the market :)) , then for 4K,16TB max for one partition of MBR, and 64K,256TB max for one partition of MBR

In wiki,
The organization of the partition table in the MBR limits the maximum addressable storage space of a disk to 2 TB (232 × 512 bytes)
MBR
So the computer only recognized first 2TB, like 32 bit system find 4GB memory while 8GB memory.
If you want to take advantage of the rest, you can use some software which I mentioned.

I want either format it into 2 partitions as mbr, either as one at always at mbr because i just want to see the hdd my wd hd tv gen2 media player my win7 32bit and 64bit see the hdd normally.
Every partition and i choose or anything i formatted the wd hd tv gen2 it doesn't regonise/seee it.

So what you suggest me to do.

You cannot get one with MBR but 2 with MBR as I said in #12.
For use 2
you can use the software.“Acronis True Image 2014”, not by windows 7 disk management because #13

Acronis Extended Capacity Manager
