Solved Windows 7 "A required CD/DVD drive device is missing".

Well i have a Dell Inspiron N4050.

The problem was two weeks ago, i was using my computer normally, then i restarted it so to make it a little faster (It was running slow).

So when i restart, it enters normally, later, it freezes, i could move the cursor, but neither open or execute files or programs...

I did a System restore with dell Backup and Recovery default installed..

It worked normally but after i restart, it says "BOOTMGR IS MISSING"

I did what i knew and copy the bootmgr in the C:/ drive, but later it said "No operating system found" something like that..

After thet i managed to reinstall windows 7, but that is when this problem came...


When i install it says

A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

I have the drivers, because i had the driver cd, and managed to find the (What i supposed it was) AHCI/ATA Sata driver.

But it didn´t work.

I have tried with windows 7 Professional x64 English, spanish version, and nothing..

Please help, i need my laptop for studies..

Also Tried installing windows 7 Thin pc, and it permits me installation, but not sure if i could update to professional or something.

You mean you did go back to factory defaults? If so.... why the heck?

Can you do that procedure again. It is succesfully? After reboot still "bootmgr is missing"? Post results.

The problem is that there is no image of an operating system... there is nothing to restore, right now the problem is cd/dvd driver missing... i gave the driver for the dvd drive, but it says that there is no new hardware for the driver..

Welcome to Seven forums.

If you have made a backup image using dell datasafe then check this video for reinstalling windows using datasafe backup image:

Also, when do you receive this errror while installing the windows or while you are booted in the windows.

Do you have the backup image on a USB drive or a CD. If you have the disks you can perform a clean reinstall of windows:

Use a new ISO because the error almost always means a bad installer.

I will try using other iso files, i have been using the sames, maybe that is my problem..

I knew hot to use the dell datasafe, i did it once, the problem i had was my pc had like a freeze every time i entered windows, i reset it to factory but the same problem happened 5 months later, i thougth it was a bad windows installation... later when i wanted to restore using dell datasafe, BOOTMGR IS MISSING.. etc etc..

I will try using another iso file, thanks to all..

I have another question, in this webpage i can download Win 7 Iso images.. for my pc, i am almost a intermediate in computing technology, ad i saw it says RTM, media refresh, and Old, wich one should i download.. by knowing my specs, wich one do you recommend..??

I found what the media refresh was, so microsoft say it´s a bug fix, but they are basically the same..
I will download The Spanish windows 7 ultimate (media refresh)
Is that okay? my internet speed is 512Kb, so i take a lot to download iso files..

You need to download the version for which you have license. That license is printed on your COA sticker. If it's Home Basic as it says in your specs, you'll need to download Home Premium and unlock all versions using the eicfg removal tool. Then choose only your licensed version to install, or later it will not activate.

First try running the Dell Diagnostics triggered by tapping the F12 boot menu at startup. Run Built-In Diagnostics for Your Dell Computer | Dell US. This may alert you to hardware problems you have.

If it will run then keep the Dell OEM Tools partition during install, but delete all others and create and Format a New partition in the space during steps 7 and 8 of the illustrated steps for install at Clean Install Windows 7 http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?docid=266787

Got another problem...

I tried to install ubuntu (to at least have a pc in which i can surf teh web, listen music, etc..

So it showed me a problem with the input/output of the dev/sda1 (c:// in windows)

So i figured out that i had a problem with my HDD, so i used my windows xp with to CHKDSK my drive, so i got this:

volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems

Right now im trying to download the Hirens Boot CD.. wish me luck...

Thanks to all, i replaced my hard drive (run the DELL program in the BIOS to know if my pc is okay) and i had my hard drive got replaced, and could not install windows 7, i have tried to install it via usb with the official program by microsoft, and also had to try it on virtual machine, to work on my pc, i had to install ubuntu, i have run the same windows 7 image on virtual machine, and it worked, i used Virtualbox, and use the iso image to install it.

The thing is, it slows my pc to have two OS at the same time, i want to either dual boot, or leave just windows 7.

So i tried with another iso image, used the win7 official usb creator, and when i ran it on my pc, same error that i did not have a driver.

My conclusion is the installation method is wrong, or my DVDs used to create are cheap, burning process was too fast, bootable usb was not created correctly...

I need a method to install it that will work. Use a specificate (sorry, my english is not good enough) type of DVD to burn it, because mine were not that good, or what..

Please help me.. If you have any questions you would like to ask, i will answer...

found that i cannot create bootalbe 64BIT from a 32BIT pc, so i downloaded bootsect and trying again, wish me luck... i will edit if fails..

Back up your files, unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install:

Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here. I would use a fresh ISO written with tool in Step 2 as yours is in question.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of wiping the HD and marking Active which overcomes certain install failures.
