Email password not working on my laptop

I have a desktop and a laptop. Both are running Win7 and use Thunderbird as the amail client. Everything works fine on my desktop. On my laptop, I can receive emails but cannot send them. When I try to send an email, I get a message that I need to enter my passowrd. I enter it and I'm told the one I entered is invalid. This has happened several times. I have uninstalled Tbird and reinstalled it. I have compared the account settings with my desktop and they are the same. I have deleted the password and reinstalled it, I can use web mail that uses the same passord and it works fine. Any suggestions?

POP protocol=for receiving mail
SMTP protocol=for sending mail

Only send mail isn't working, retrieving mail works fine.... correct? Most of the time you don't need a password to send mail. (just like putting a letter in a mailbox).

Has the working computer a mail password set for outgoing mail? Or maybe a checkmark at a setting (outgoing mail) like "use same settings as incoming mail"?

compair those settings with the not mailing machine

Looking at accounts and the SMTP listing, the authentication listing is "normal password". Thst is true for bothe computers.

Follow Kaktussoft's lead, but just to be sure it's not malware...

Download, install and run a full scan using Malwarebytes' (Mbam)
Direct download link: Malwarebytes

:warn: When installing Malwarebytes, do NOT elect the free trial of the full version; you only want the free version.

Katussoft - The password for SMTP has been set on both computers. I even deleted the password on the laptop and reentered it.
Slartybart - I usually run Malware bytes frequently but I ran it again for a full scan. It found one malware. It deleted it and I still can't send an email.

Could you enilighten me on what Malwarebytes removed? You can check the log:
C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\

If want to check your machine while you're waiting... go ahead and run AdwCleaner. Post the results (nothing found... or .... XyZ found and removed)
Download AdwCleaner
   Note
The default save location is your Downloads folder.
AdwCleaner is a standalone executable, there is nothing to install.

  1. Navigate to your Downloads folder
    .
  2. Right-click on adwcleaner.exe
--> select Run As Administrator to launch the application
    .
  3. Click on Delete button

    picture.php

  4. Confirm each deletion with OK
    .
  5. Your computer will be rebooted automatically.
--> A text file will open after the restart.
--> Please post the content of that logfile in a post on this thread
:note: You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

If you're still waiting for me to get back, please post the following configuration information.

I'm not familiar with Thunderbird, but Email clent to server configuration is pretty much the same.

Can you provide configuration information for Thunderbird on both machines?
   Warning
Edit the image or file and remove personal info such as EMail address.
The information as presented by WLM on my machine (IMAP will be different, but similar enough)

Do really need a passowrd to SEND mail? Be sure you typed the correct password. Some key on keyboard isn't working? (type your password in WORD to test)

To Slartybart;
The log file for maleware is too big and they exceed the limit of the forum by 10%. I can send the ADW log file. I'm sorry it has taken so long to reply but I screwed up mu password manager in the meantime, What should I do?

No sweat Bill,

If you look at the log files and it reports nothing found, no need to post the log, but please do confirm a clean scan. If nasties were found, you can cut and paste the names.

Otherewise, I'm still interested in the Thunderbird configuration. Oftimes the port #is wrong due to SSL - sometimes there's a typo (I've done it and scratched my head repeatedly).

Just be sure no personal information is presented such as your eMail address - you can use Paint to select and Delete anything private.

Must have been seeing things :p

I don't recall any links that correct eMail pw issues. The only one I can think of would be the Service provider's PW reset. I don't recommend that now - it would only add a new variable.

You can still receive mail - right?

To Slartybart;
I tried to copy the server settings on Thunderbird but I cannot so I don't know how to give the info to you. Incidentally, I have checked the listings for both the server and the SMTP side by side and they are identical. I will still send the info if you can tell me how to do it.

Have you tried deleting cookies (Thunderbird email) on the laptop?

If Malwarebytes' found a lot of malware on the laptop, then it's possible that your Thunderbird email account has blocked you from sending from that computer.

I had already deleted all cookies and I checked and there aren't any. As to the malware, most of the log listing consisted of corrections to the registry and shortcuts. There was little or few actual malware. If you want to look at it, I could eliminate all the registry and shortcut entries and send the rest so it would fit on a reply page.

Open the configuration window(s) in Thunderbird and grab a screen shot of each (servers and ports)
See http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9717-screenshot-paint.html
Option 2 (Active Window) is best

Place the malware logs in seperate zip files and attach (paperclip on post menu) them in a new post on this thread- compressing might get you below the forum threshold.
