I play only a couple games, so I am not sure why I get this issue. I play Mechwarrior Online with no major issues, no crashes, etc. It is a little laggy but that is due to internet and RAM. I get This below error when I play MoO3 (Master of Orion 3) on my machine.

My profile machine is my current machine. I run Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (freshly installed about a month ago but has been updated fully), AMD Radeon HD 6570 (drivers should be up to date and were as of install), 750w Kowbewoo PSU (not a Bronze/Gold/etc rated unit), MSI B75A-G43 (the military III board not the gaming board, both share same series), 500 GB Western Digital WD5000AVVS green Hard drive, a wireless N-150 usb adapter, HP DVD burner with lightscribe (rarely used, using generic windows 7 drivers). I do not do heavy gaming. I mostly run Mechwarrior online, which runs - just a little laggy due to RAM and lower CPU and then MoO3 (Master of Orion 3). It is MoO3 giving me trouble. I am able to run it fine, but every now and then I click on a world and it throws a DirectX error but it is on rare (30%-ish) of the worlds, not all the worlds. It then gives me the below crash report. I can post a screen shot of the error if someone tells me how to do it on here, but it is very close to the little I stated - like 5 words or so is all it says. My DX version should be the latest, I have been running updates when it states I have a new one.

The error in the game states "DirectX Surface unavailable". It is a black screen with nothing else other than the mouse. I have to hit ESC to get out of the screen, then it crashes the game with the above app crash log.

edit - I just double checked, I am running DX11. And my graphics driver was updated Dec 1, 2013 - and it shows no new updates.

edit - I also ran Memtest and it came up with 0 errors on the installed memory, and that was run for an hour to do the test to make sure that it was good.

As I mentioned, I do run ultimate 64 bit windows 7. I did not think of the game not working with dx11. In the past games always ran with newer versions. They would run with version 9.0c for example when written for version 8. Also I did check and I am updated to dx11.

Hi greywolf, Welcome to Sevenforums.

Have you tried running the game with compatibility mode?

Follow this tutorial to run the game in compatibility mode.

Step 16 in my stickied (http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/77293-tips-troubleshooting-game-issues.html) tutorial mentions compatibility mode.

Sorry but you're talking about an 11 year old game here so I'm not really surprised you are getting issues.

And what OS are you running Win 7 32 or 64 bit?

BTW you might want to check out steps 5, 6, & 16 here: http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/77293-tips-troubleshooting-game-issues.html

At the OP, if you read the link I posted, you'd know that DX11 was backwards compatible; however, it still doesn't guarantee an 11 year old game will play.

BTW is that game DX8 or 9? Cause if it's 8, your chances of getting to it to run under a 64-bit OS is even slimmer.

Anyway try Windows 95 or XP compatibility mode.

Good luck.

I did try with xp compatibility mode, sorry that I forgot to say that. I realize it is not guaranteed but I have never had a problem in the past.

Run the program in compatibility mode. fine.

In the compatibility window, check the box Disable Visual theme, Run in 640*480 resolution (don't worry you can change the res in the game options) and run the program as admin.

Click on apply and click ok and then try to run the game.

What do you mean you never had a problem in the past? In the past was the program run under Windows 7 64-bit?

Running under XP and running it under 7 64-bit are two different things when it comes an 11 year old game. XP is much more forgiving since it's a much older OS than Win 7.

I did run it under Vista, and I believe that it was 64 bit but not positive.

Well even 7 is different than Vista, but not by much. Anyway if compatibility mode isn't working for you, you could scour the net to see if anyone figured out a way to get it running under Win 7.

There's an interest in a lot of old games so I'm sure you're not the only one looking to get this running. I found a way to get the original Deus EX the run under 7 so...

Goof luck.
