Just took a look inside my PC and the HDMI/VGA port is on the motherboard..
Was wondering if its possible to upgrade it to something with 2 HDMI + VGA?

PC: Acer Aspire-X1301

Board layout: HERE

On board #16 & #17
16 - PCI Express x16 slot
17 - PCI Express x1 slot

Can I connect a upgraded graphics card to these? If so what wires do I need?

Sorry for the nooby post :(

Hey Jacko,

Yes, you can put a graphic card on your mobo.

But, first thing. How much you want to spent? What power supply you have? We can suggest better if we get the answers. :)

For starters, try some of these and keep us posted. :D

Ok, Well I've attached some pictures of some specs on my PC.. Should help.
Edit: Won't upload, links below.

& I'm from the UK, I'm not sure exactly how much I want to spend..
Looking on upgrading a couple of things
- RAM 2x 8GB
- Graphics card
- HDD (was 1TB but it broke, Haven't had time to check it yet)

Anything else that can be recommended !

Reason I asked for the budget, because the hardware you mentioned comes in lot of varieties. Once you decide a range, we can give you best choice for your PC. As already mentioned by Golden above that a SSD is a good choice for speeding up the system.

Thanks,
I've seen 8GB RAM in Maplins for £50 each.
Graphics card - £80?
HDD/SSD - £100 (if its good)
Power supply - Not sure, Show me?

I'd stay with at least a 128Gb SSD since programs will be installed on it. A HDD for movies and such is a good idea.

For any useful GPU, you will have to upgrade your PSU. You have only 210 Watts and most better GPUs require 600+ Watts - e.g. this one which is a good GPU.

Regarding the SSD, I also suggest a 120GB model for the OS. There is a wide selection and most makes are OK - there are a few exceptions though. No idea what's available in the UK market and at what prices. I suggest you snoop around and post the links. Then we can advise you.

Another suggestion would be a SSHD. There you get a lot of storage and good performance for a modest price. I recently bought a 1TB model for appr. $90. The performance is not quite as good as a SSD, but better than a traditional HDD. I made some performance tests - see here:

Thanks.

I think I'll leave the graphics for now then?
Its not going to be something thats done overnight..

Firstly: Hard drives

Think, Firstly I'll get a 120GB SSD for boot and just run off that (for now)
Then, Try fix my 1TB HDD for storage.

I'm not 100% though how to work it.. Say if I got a 120GB SDD and my 1TB HDD working.. Which would be the best way to connected them ?

(sorry i'm not the best at explaining, but I hope you understand)

I have the standard SATA + power which my HDD is connected to.
Then I have the 16 pin (can't remember name, is further back in thread)
Then I also have a eSATA connector next to my HDMI

So if I connect the SDD where my current HDD is (best performance?)
then the 1TB HDD to the eSATA? Would that work? Would I get best performance from that?

Secondly: RAM
If I do get 2x8GB or 2x4GB .. Would this be much beneficial as I'm currently using 2x2GB ?
Would it boost performance much?

After them two have been upgraded, thats when I'll save up for a PSU and upgrade the graphics card.

To be honest, My PC runs smoothly at the moment.. I never 'game' on my PC just general use but I do have sever programs running at once (mostly for android/chrome dev)

Just if I change the HDD & RAM to what I've explained above, Will I see a noticeable change?

Again, Thanks for your help!

Yes, you will see a major improvement.

You don`t need to hook the HDD as an external, hook it to the motherboard just like the ssd. Put the ssd on sata port #1 and the hdd on sata port #2

Yes, you will see a major improvement.

You don`t need to hook the HDD as an external, hook it to the motherboard just like the ssd. Put the ssd on sata port #1 and the hdd on sata port #2

Thanks.

But as I said above, I don't think I have 2 sata's..

here's a link to my mobo

I only have:
SATA - HDD currently connected
PCI Express x16 slot - nothing connected (what wires would I need to connect SATA?)
PCI Express x1 slot - nothing connected (what wires would I need to connect SATA?)
eSATA - on back of tower - nothing connected

The layout says there are two SATA ports. One a SATA II, for the SSD, port two is SATA I where you would attach the HDD.

I concur, I see 2 also.

Red dots 6 and 11

I think they are just numbered 1 and 2, as all sata ports are, I`m sure they`re both the same speed.
