Hi all, I have reset the router, reset the USB drive thats plugged into the router, rebooted the computers and still nothing. I made sure the workgroup name is the same on all computers, both are listed as home networks too.

I have an asus ac68u router with a seagate 3TB external 3.0 drive plugged into the router.

My one windows 7 professional service pack 1 computer (ethernet connected) when I right click on (NETWORK) in a windows explorer window I can click on map network drive. I browse the folder option and I can see:

RT-AC68U in my list to select and map
along with the computer I am on is in the list too
AND I can see the other computer that wont map anything thats described below in this list.

Everything works fine on this first computer. I can access all the files on the seagate with no problems what so ever. I mapped the seagate usb drive as z:

On my second computer with windows 7 professional service pack 1 (ethernet connected) when I right click on network I can see only the one computer above that sees everything.

I checked all the advanced share settings on the second computer and they are identical to the first one that works.

A side note: I also have a windows 8 laptop that can't see the seagate as a mappable drive but it does show up under the my pc list in windows explorer. I cant map it though there either.

I'm baffled as to to why my one computer works fine and the other does not. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

You might try making adjustments as described in the link to the machines that won't see the drive or won't allow mapping to the attached drive.

The adjustments described in the link have worked to access NAS storage drives and drives connected to older windows servers.

Hello,

Hi 2xg, thanks for replying. Let me copy paste what I said above for you:

I made sure the workgroup name is the same on all computers.

On my second computer with windows 7 professional service pack 1 (ethernet connected)
A side note: I also have a windows 8 laptop that can't see the seagate as a mappable drive but it does show up under the "this" pc list in windows explorer. I cant map it though there either.

Hi Chev65, very interesting you sent me there, I was messing with those settings just last night. I even tried the regedit setting in my windows 8 home laptop:
2. - locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/System
3 - create a new DWORD entry with the name EnableLinkedConnections and value 1.
4 - restart your computer

5 ----- it never worked for me, as a matter of a fact after messing with stuff on my win 8 laptop, under this PC in windows explorer the RT-AC68U selection is now missing. :( So now I cant access it on my win 8 laptop either but yet my desktop that has it is still visible and working like a charm?

I never mentioned messing the registry and those registry adjustments do not work with Windows 8 home.

Hi Chev65, yes its true you never did mention messing with the registry but like I said earlier I found that page last night before I read your comments about that page today.

I tried to do the Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy you mention over there but on my windows 8 home computer I don't have access to that local security policy so I tried the other idea in that thread. It never worked either and I deleted that registry line but the RT-AC68U still never came back in the This PC explorer section.

There are many with this problem but not a definite solution as yet.

The suggestions in the link may help, no idea which one might work for you. You might try updating the firmware on that router as well, I'm running the AC66U.
Windows 8 Explorer cannot see NAS drive on WiFi connected laptop

I'm not sure why you can't see the Asus router in explorer and can't see how that one registry setting would have an effect on that. I'm sure you can still access the router through it's gateway IP. I would also think it possible to get into the NAS by using \\192.168.x.x it's IP but the security settings on Windows 8 may still need some adjustments.

Another possible solution below:
To connect to a NAS from Windows 8, Try this.. its been tried on a number of PC's without a problem. Edit or create the D word registry key
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters\RequireSecuritySignature and set to 0

So get a load of this, I pulled out my older RT-AC66U and hooked up the drive to it and every computer networks to it with no problems. All computers map with no problems. It's obviously this stupid RT-AC68U that's the problem. The setting on the 68 (with up to date firmware) is identical to the settings on the 66 so I guess a call to asus tech support is in order. :(

I would think they would come up with a firmware update to fix the problem in this case.

That is a recent router with USB 3.0 support etc. so they probably don't have all the bugs worked out just yet.

Thanks for all the help chev65, but here I am, scrambling around in the dark dragging all the people who tried to help down with me all because the mapping worked perfectly fine on one win 7 computer but not the others. The obvious problem would suggest the other computers right? Dang asus. Actually this is my 2nd RT-AC68U cause I had to take the first one back to staples and exchange it cause it wouldn't grab an IP address from the modem. My ISP could see the router from the modem but it just wouldn't ask for an IP? I should have known to troubleshoot this dumb router days ago. :(

Update for anyone who is struggling to find a solution for this problem in the future. My problem was I kept checking for firmware updates through the asus 192.168.1.1 control panel and it always said I was running the newest version and no updates available.

My version was 3.0.0.4.374.371. I finally did a manual look on the asus page last night and lo and behold there was 3 newer updates??? So I updated to the latest 3.0.0.4.374.573 beta and my drives all show up fine now. :)

I hate to quote myself but when your right your right. Yes checking through the routers interface for firmware updates doesn't really work. Asus is the place to go for those.
