Hi,

At my workplace we have 4 computers running on Windows 7 Professional, and they are networked to a server running SBS 2011 Standard.

For a while now one user has been unable to access the internet from one computer, but can still access the network and Outlook etc. Every other user on the network can access the internet from this computer.

When he can't access the internet, Chrome and IE say there is a problem with the proxy server.

I have found recently that when the computer stops his internet access, the server is requesting that updates are installed on the server, and usually installing those updates sorts the issue out and he can get on the internet again.

Today though (and this has happened a few times). He was using the computer and could get on the internet. I then logged into the machine and when he logged back in after I had finished he could no longer access the internet. The server didn't need updating, restarting it didn't help and restarting the computer didn't help.

Today for the first time I ran a Windows Diagnostics and it said the server was denying the user access to the internet.

As far as I am aware the internet settings (LAN etc) are controlled by the server.

This is the report it generated...

- The remote device or resource won't accept the connection
The device or resource (Google) is not set up to accept connections
on port "https".

The clue is When he can't access the internet, Chrome and IE say there is a problem with the proxy server.

Is it set in IE to use a proxy if its a proxy setting its either malware or anti virus using a proxy to scan

If it was malware or the anti virus, wouldn't that stop the other two regular users on that PC from getting on the internet too?

And why would installing updates on the server, temporarily solve the problem?

Do you have your server set as a proxy server? If not and the client is configured for it then that is why they cannot access the internet. Check the internet settings from IE. How to Disable Proxy Settings in Your Web Browser

Not sure, but I do know on the LAN Setting window, it says some settings are controlled by the server.

Off the top of my head 2 user roles are the same and 1 (me) is an administrator.

Just had a quick look on the server and the user who is having the issue is set as a network administrator too.
