The User Profile Service failed the logon. Safe mode, only my profile

Hi
After experiencing some blue screens (graphics driver related) I reverted back to 314.22 and this morning decided to give the card a good clean.

This is my main PC which has Windows 7 Home Premium, Q9450, GTX 260 (216).

Somehow I managed to corrupt my user profile and received the User Profile Service failed the logon message. Following the advice to boot in using Safe Mode showed only my profile with no access to the registry editor or command line. I then rebooted in safe mode with command line and enabled the built in administrator account. The next reboot into safe mode showed my account and other. Since mine is the only account that I have set up and I am not able to create a new account (the Control Panel user account options do not work) I have no idea what to do next.

I would prefer not to have to perform a fresh install so any help would be gratefully received.

John

Logon as built-in "administrator" account in safe mode. Works?
Logon as built-in "administrator" account in normal mode. Works?

If working.... create a new fresh admin account.

I have also tried the Command Prompt at Startup method, which when restarted gives me the option to log in as John or Other User. Mine seems to be corrupt and the other user is blank.

I have also followed the enable from Winre tutorial and found that the F string already contained the value 10. This would suggest that I have been using the built in adminstrator account as my own (although I don't remember doing so or renaming it). Therefore if my assumption is correct would a clean install be my only option?

Sorry, not thinking straight. I have used System Restore from safe mode and now have my system back.

Is there any way in which I can confirm that I am using the built-in administrator account as my own? Presumably I can then create a new user account for myself and restore the built-in account to Administrator and disable it.

Now I just have to sort out the crashes which started with Borderlands 2.
