The Persist files are in CAB format (a variation on a Zip file) - WinRAR can open them. They show as folders in Explorer.
You're looking in the wrong pane - the CBS.log file should be in the right-hand pane like all ordinary files.

Otherwise in your post, I'm puzzled about your references to "panes"...

I typed the words CBS.log in the search box above the word "START"

I specifically targeted the entire computer/all libraries/all files/ all locations/ all hidden files.......Took about 10 minutes to search everywhere.... (just like I did before but I manually specified everything this way to insure I did not miss a location where it could be hiding)...


I still get what I posted in my prior Reply of 12-26-13

What I "edited" out on the "right" pane were my own personal information showing my names for Drives on this computer/backup drive/ dropbox etc... individual file names do not appear on the "right" pane..

Oh, did I mention that I (sorry Microsoft) HATE the Aero look and it confused me so much I've had the computer's theme set to VISTA (I never owned Vista its all that someone found for me as an alternate theme) so if there is no right pane in Vista, but there are in AERO version then that is why I'm still......
confused about what I should do at this point to get you the correct files/ exe. to run and produce reports so you can help me properly.. I'll keep trying and playing with it, until I find an answer for you....


(but you do know the story of me playing with computers... oh right you don't-----that's why I go to others who are much more expert in how to handle unexpected outcomes on the computer to help me through these troubled times....)


(if this is too confusing, just ignore it but under "full disclosure" of what is going on since you can't remotely view my screen I'm providing the following information updating the screen shot which for obvious reasons I'm not retaking again:

(Of corse I saved my screenshots as "CBS.log" not found files about 5 of them, So now when I do the search it no longer comes up with the phrase "No items match your search" like I said before.... Now, I have your notes to me transferred and saved on the Windows 7 computer and screenshots for future reference should this happen again to me.......so the search now produces 5 new files----plus I discovered that I had some old old "2009" panther (early Mac computer OS name) files that also use the term "cbs" so they popped up under this deep search method...... both of them were short word pad documents only had dates and times on it saying ok ok "info" and a few "warnings" all dated 2009, so I won't bother you reading them unless they explain why there is no CBS.log file in Windows 7??? I never told the computer to save my Mac stuff, its connected by either home "intra-net" wireless network which still works, but the outside world Internet for the Windows 7 refuses to work still yet the Mac and iPad and old XP desktop etc etc all are working just fine on the Internet.

Open Windows Explorer (in the Search box, type Explorer and hit the Enter key)
The resulting windows should show two or three panes. The left pane is folders, middle pane is files, the right pane (if present) is a preview pane for the highlighted file.

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder in the left pane - what shows in the middle/right-hand pane?

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

DIR C:\Windows\Logs\CBS
ICACLS C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Thank goodness for the Internet keeping me connected with the rest of the world...

Before doing anything ---had to check out computer to see if malware or virus had done anything...

So ran Malwarebytes and Norton Anti-Virus/Internet Security both on deep scans for an hour or more each... one found one threat and eliminated it and other found 16 tracking cookies but that's all.....

Still no internet on Windows 7 OS

Here are the results as requested for the DOS commands.... (I should explore how to post screenshots on this Forum so I can type "between" the shots with my comments, but as things go here they all post in a row after the text editing box so I know you know what I did.....

I tried changing the "view" to different things, but I still don't get the third pane you mentioned...

(Apple of course has always the 3 panes showing as a default I can select, but never got the Windows 7 to emulate that).

In the Screenshots you see I tried to click on the CBS file to open it and got Notepad and a box saying "access denied"... I am the only administrator on the computer no password protected on start up as this computer is treated as a permanent desktop not to leave home......yet I usually get denied access to many things others tell me I should have, unless some hacker has hijacked the administrator code/command from me?

All you need to do is copy the CBS.log file to the desktop - the reason that access is denied is because the file is open in the System account, but you have enough access to be able to copy it.
Once you have the copy, you can open that in Notepad or another text viewer - you can also compress it, and send it to your apple and upload it to your reply

I copied CBS file (it never says "log" except in the command CP DOS box)

I copied two SUR files, are they useful? Are they SURT? Why no "T"?? Confusing.....

The CBS file is not uploading.... you mentioned compressing... I don't seem to have that "button" to choose.. I got this message of course (dummy me).... CBS is this the CBS log file or not 12-29-13.txt:

I don't compress my files in my drives as it interferes with Norton Ghost which I use for backup... so where do I put it to just compress that "one" file as it seems all I can do is "compress the entire drive" of computer... which I certainly don't want to do at 500 GB would take forever....

P.S. out of my computer knowledge curiosity.... I tried to Google the definition of "CBS" and Windows 7 to figure out myself what it is you are looking at... all I get is references to "Vista" (I"m not a good "googler!") and they refer to groups of 100 files and checking to see if the file is original or is damaged and repaired by the system.. I took a quick look in my CBS files I downloaded to you and seems all my system is doing when it tries to contact the internet in the CBS files... is "failing to open package"... with no attempts at repair...

Just taking baby steps here in this computer knowledge area of Windows 7, am I reading that right? Why is there no google reference to Windows 7? I usually eventually get old books when they are discarded about how to do Windows 7 from Microsoft i.e. help desk or etc type of titles for all prior versions of Windows like XP NT et al I'm familiar and use everyday..... but no Windows 7 yet in my library so at a loss right now)

You first ran the tool on 25/12 - and it fixed the following problem..

The subsequent runs found no more problems.


You need to compress the CBS.log file before uploading it - it's almost certainly larger than the filesize allowed for these forums (8MB) but should reduce massively on compression.

Just sat at computer trying to compress the File..

Neither Windows 7 nor Mac present a button when asked to "save" for choice "compress file", so what am I missing...

Do I need to find and download a compression program? (that may be difficult as the Windows 7 computer is still offline and Mac is too old for new programs).....

Let me get that CBS log file to you if that will provide the answer to the next step....

(code I copied off Mac says the file is 3.50 MB what is the max size for a file on Windows Seven Forum? (where is this information?)

Unfortunately, the SFC scan results have rolled off into one of the CBSPersist files - assuming you succeeded in running it.
However, there are no signs of any significant errors in the log, so it's unlikely that major problems exist.

Having said that, it's known that under certain circumstances, Norton software can block all access to the internet and similar services.
I would suggest uninstalling Norton, and running the Norton Removal Tool (This will remove ALL Norton software, so make sure that you note the appropriate details first!) - then install Microsoft Security Essentials at least until we get the problem sorted out.


Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

Then run the following command in an Elevated Command Prompt, and post the results.

IPCONFIG /ALL

(close the window, and try accessing the internet - what happens now?)

Thanks for your suggestions as always....

You're probably going to yell at me (all caps on web) but I have been on the Norton help pages as I really really really do not like using the Norton Removal tool as I'm not 100% about reinstalling from a "non-physical" disk that all Symantec purchases are made nowadays..

And I know you want me to migrate off Norton and all AV software to Microsoft Security Essentials which seems like the right choice.... but if I wanted to go back I'm afraid I'd lose my codes/product keys and etc by removing everything...

(so what did I do?)

I've been in CP before with my wireless printer telephone/remote people----setting up the Wireless access for that printer (HP), and so I know what my IPCONFG /ALL should look like ----so I pretended that I removed the Norton stuff and just followed the rest of your instructions exactly.....

I got the results, but since it seems to contain lots of personally identifiable data.. You don't want or need to know my DNS Suffix or Link-Local IPv6 Address as all of these are my own particular domains, etc and Hexadecimal codes that should not be posted... so the question is what am I allowed to post before I post it?? (i.e. what exactly from the IPCONFIG /ALL would you like to see?)

So I'm not posting the results, just say that all the Domans/Sub masks Default Gateway, DHCP Server, DNS Server et al all appear to be the numbers that I'm used to seeing for that computer/IP access...

The XP VM ones listed under: "Ethernet Adapter VirtualBox Host-Only Network" seem to be ok as well for that IPv4 Address (but the Default Gateway is blank for that one which is why XP does not work either)

There are about five other groups that are all blanks... maybe that is where the problem is occurring.... They are repetitively:

Tunnel Adapter isatap: and the categories under which they are all 00:00: etc etc no values....

So I'd thought I'd pass along some of these bits and pieces (I know I should just cut and paste the whole thing here but who knows who reads it other than you on this site, so I'm worried about giving out the wrong private information.. I could "xxx" all of the data but that would not help you...

OR, I can "xxx" the data that appears to be personal, but who knows what I might miss in doing that and allow hackers access to my computer (once I get Internet back again)

Oh and of course the Internet is still not working.. I did a thorough checking of menu items like under Tools/ Internet options and anything else I could click on to view (not changed a single item) just to see if I could notice something amiss.. but everything looks just like its supposed to, except no Internet connection (yet the bars on the right taskbar show I should have full (excellent) Wireless AND Internet access point 100%-- SSID everything is just fine all green bars)

Just your thinking at this point while I'm waiting for the Norton Forum people to figure out what a person who is not comfortable with the Norton Removal Tool should do now that Norton no longer has their usual (what I got used to as a crutch) free telephone/web/remote access help for installing/reinstalling items... they just have pages and pages of lists of instructions to be followed and if they don't work, go to more lists of instructions ad infinitum.........

There is nothing in the IPCONFIG output which can give any hacker significant chances of getting to your computer - assuming you have a NAT router between you and the internet.

If you read the appropiate page of the Norton link I sent you to, you will find that it tells you how to save your license details etc.

Installing from a download is actually a lot better than from a disk, as the download is updated on a regular basis, while a disk may have been on the shelf for 6 months or more.

Whatever that command NETSH WINSOCK RESET and instructions were, they did the lot! Internet is back on again! (still using the Mac as of course the other Windows 7 computer does not have this page bookmarked as its been offline for over two weeks.....


Now I can reply to all the Christmas/New Years' cards I get online! Whew! Must have 1000 Emails to go over since 12-18 including the ones that should be in junk pile but never have time to teach the filters properly...... Some people have been asking me in person, "did I get their card?" I know, they're just saving the price of postage here in the US (currently 46 cents per ounce)(.2656 British Pound--no symbol for this too old Mac computer will not take 2007 downloads)...

Anyway....the details are that after following your suggestions I ended up with same situation... or at least it appeared to be that way (I've closed and opened or restarted computer dozens of times since this began but never after your Command lines were entered so, I had to try it again.... ) I have a terminal program to a larger computer....and .... and ... "Connected!" Wait a minute! I have Internet.. so I tried a test with the Malwarebytes that keeps saying its 8 days old and it updated! So I clicked on the IE 10 icon in tray and sure enough... there is the full internet!

How can I thank you enough! What a great way to start off the New Year with my ability to communicate back to all the nice people who sent me E-cards over past few weeks and I've just been my usual delayed sending back (then I lost the Internet and got nothing done at all---since the Mac no longer is allowed to access and reply on those online Email/Ecard sites due to upgrades in performance/programming earlier this year)....

I know I wrote a lot of TMI---extraneous information.. if you think its worthwhile to use and refer to this discussion/thread to help others in this same dire predicament, then I can go back and edit out all the extra comments about weather, etc non-computer items.... to make it flow better...

So, Thank you too UsernameIssues (yes I got that problem too with my name, now I'm stuck with it as I used up my best Email address for that one).....for that helpful screenshot.. yes my IPCONFIG /ALL produced a similar screen with wireless....NAT addresses like you demonstrated..
I never knew about NAT, thanks for the information.. I always thought my strange 10.0 xxxxx etc address was something very unique as I've seen thousands of other's IP addresses over the years and never had such a convenient one easy to remember too! Now I know why... Its an Apple Airport Wireless Router (2012 as a blackout destroyed the original one)....

Thanks about the reference to ignoring the notes, but I find it interesting that the Ethernet Adapter is said to not use that address.. wondering why.. maybe its another one of the big mysteries of how XP VM worked (or lack of it) on Windows 7 as I can get Internet but the ability to print to a wireless printer is and has been totally prevented, so all of the XP Programs I have like Office et al that produce or should be producing printed outputs for me never worked so I have to retain the older XP computer which does still have that ability.... thought I could combine both into one computer by using the XP on the VM Desktop.. had to resort to OracleVirtual Box instead to get that working.....

The computer that generated the IPCONFIG info shown in that screenshot was connected to a Wireless Access Point, but the wired adapter was not connected - yet. The notes tell these college students and staff should register the Media Access Control address (MAC) for their computers. This allows them access to resources that are not available via the wireless network. Those instructions are for a complex network at a college. They have nothing to do with your network... VM or otherwise.

I'm familiar with your first thread (http://www.sevenforums.com/virtuali...-wirelessly-home-network-wirelessprinter.html). I don't know why you could not get the XP VM bridged... but - since you already have VirtualBox working, then there is no need to revisit the topic.
