What's the Best Anti-virus?

hey jstevens16, i have always used the free antivirus and have had no real problems with the ones that i have tried. i use avg free and avast free for my desktops. panda i use on my laptop. they all do a decent job if you use the most important protection which is common sense and smart web surfing. any virus that i have had was because i failed to scan something that i downloaded and when i opened it up BAM i was infected. freeware provides basic protection. i have heard that webroot is good i am just to cheap to spend the bucks. the only way to to find out is to try it out and then you know. it also depends on what you are doing on the web. just my opinion. poorguy

I'm new on these forum, my first post hehe, im currently using Microsoft SE, Malwarebytes AM Pro, FRST, and Adwcleaner, I'm planning in changing my AV, a friend recommended Webroot SA Internet Security Complete... is this any good...has anybody tried this one... this cost about $52...could I get my money's worth...would greatly appreciate any info or heads up..thanks in advance.

Welcome to Seven Forums jstevens16. I have no experience with Webroot Antivirus. But personally I see no need to pay for an Antivirus either Looks like acme12 has posted a nice link to save you some money should you decide to try it. A Guy

I've never used Webroot but I can tell you that you can beat that price by about $20 if you check out Amazon. I used Norton's for years but recently decided to go with Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, and I like it a lot... Anyway good luck with what ever you go with.

Yep I am with Mack and have been with Kaspersky for the last four years but I still use Malwarebytes SuperAntiSpyware and ADWCleaner for back up / on call scanners as as nothing is foolproof.

I saw recently too that Emisoft was becoming quite a good suite to use too and I must give it try on the tester.

Thanks for the info guys....its a great help and I really appreciate it....I think I'll give it try Webroot but in trial mode first because I'm curious about the Cloud AV feature and how it goes before buying....but I'll be keeping MBAM, AdwCleaner and FRST...will post a feedback on how it goes.

hi guys and gals am posting here after not much response at eightforums. got awesome help here a couple years ago.
I have a new HP notebook, running windows 8.1. came with McAfee. I uninstalled it, and changed to Windows Defender.
got adware. had to reset computer.
I have been researching for a couple days. no easy answers here.
people here, helped me to choose AVG free for my other computers, all running windows 7. they helped me to make all the settings for windows 7. my other computers are a desktop, built by a small builder guy, a sony vaio laptop, and a gateway laptop nv53a.
I also use spyware blaster and WOT. I have not trouble in a log time, with any of my computers.
all of the above, was chosen and set up with help from people here.
would someone please help me to choose what to get for my new HP?
should I do the same, AVG free, spyware blaster and WOT?
any help greatly appreciated.

you rock. thank you very much.
all went super well on laptops/new notebook.
AVG did find 16 cookies that it called medium threats on my new notebook.
ran it again. no more.
Malware bytes found nothing on all of the above.
am running Malware bytes on my old desktop. it's found 3 objects so far.
I think it found them as soon as it started.
would anyone please advise me on, if there is anything that I should do about them?
am googling and reading, but I know that some of you are wizards.
the desktop has Windows 7 Home 64 bit.

Yep agree with you there TZ and yet I still find McAfee popping up from time to time in my reg entries - I don't know how as I am usually pretty careful with any downloads.

As matter of general habit I always check the reg for remnants with any of them when testing.

I've come to conclusion...
Everyone educated on current security attack ware is seeing there are few good defensive tools. Avast Bitdefender avg et al are becoming obsolete.
This being the case there is no significantly better real time defender than MSE on 7; Defender on 8/8.1.
None have much value and all carry considerable risk of actually being used against you. After all: do you actually know for sure what Avast etc are doing with your data, access, etc?

Isn't it McAfee that is installed by default with every Flash update? We need to make sure we don't auto-install those or any other updates (or new applications), so we can check exactly what is being installed and uncheck the crap we don't want! Yes Bing, I'm looking at you!

Isn't it McAfee that is installed by default with every Flash update? We need to make sure we don't auto-install those or any other updates (or new applications), so we can check exactly what is being installed and uncheck the crap we don't want! Yes Bing, I'm looking at you!

Hmm you have a point Seffrid but generally I am very careful with those irritating add ons although I don't remember any with Flash updates especially for McAfee.
I would add that I found just recently the ADWCleaner from bleepingcomputer is getting a tad convoluted in how and with what it is downloaded, as in it requires all of the attention when downloading from that site.

MacAfee Security Scan

Hi,

I've just reinstalled flash player leaving the MacAfee Security Scan checkbox ticked just for the hell of it!

Also monitored processes that ran when the installer launched.



Above is the list. The process that installs MacAfee when the flash player installer is run is SecurityScan_Release.exe and as you can see it's run under conhost.exe so doesn't appear in the log.

If you look at the log you'll see FM.exe is the next process to launch. This is the process that has been launched in place of SecurityScan_Release.exe and displays the following:



That's down to the registry entry here:



When SecurityScan_Release.exe is launched by ANY method even from an elevated command prompt or any other way the debugger launches FM.exe in it's place.

There is no way that MacAfee Security Scan can be installed on my machine - even if i forgot to uncheck that annoying checkbox or installed software that bundles it with the installer.

Well, I'm just saying that there's an answer to this type of problem!

ok if avg and avast and bitdefender are obsolete than what is a good choice for antivirus. i have had to many issues with security essentials. curious. poorguy

apparently there is none better than the obsolete ones that were mentioned above. i use avast free and avg free and have had no issues with either of them. my only complaint is all of the crap ware that they send with them that is not needed. i have used ad aware and security essentials and have had both try to install legacy drivers for whatever and was never able to find a fix or anyone who did find a fix and the only fix that i found was to remove them. poorguy

Obsolete because? They can't possibly catch everything new. The malware writers are very good at what they do. Beyond behavior analysis, there is no way any AV can have foreknowledge of what comes next. All they can do is react as quickly as possible, and make their programs detect any new methods used. Along with behavior analysis comes false positives. It's a constant battle. But they are not obsolete unless they stop adapting. A Guy
