Welcome
A very possible cause of your problem is a failing hard drive, run a chkdsk to find out if that is the problem.
Read this tutorial, particularly point 4. Make sure that you check scan and attempt to recover bad sectors.

Hi thanks for replying

As I mentioned above, the first thing I did was to chkdsk from a command line all internal and external drives. They were 100% fine.

Maybe I am missing something.

When you did the chkdsk, did you use the repair option that I mentioned in my post? That option is more thorough and smay pick up problems not discovered with the quick check. In addition it repairs many of the problems encountered.

Check eventlog. It's either the source or destination drive. Because you have tried many drives as output... it's almost surely the source drive.

No. I did a simple chekdsk. I'm still from ms-dos days...

I doubt it if a repair job chkdsk /F would repair something which is not there, but the worls has moved on since my early days, and I will try it now.

Need to restart. back in a min.

Hi

My brain cicuitry must be all mangled up...

I've downloaded the SeaToolsfor Windows. I've opened it; it detected the drives that I have; says that it is "Ready to Test" but even with glasses on I cannot see a button to start the test...

Ok, you're right!

The prog found problems: see attachment

The computer/hrd disk is less than 2 years old. Should I run the DOS version of SeaTools?

Try to backup with macrium reflect free. Very good backup program. If backup is impossible with macrium reflect..... there's an option to continue backup after read failure. Backup as much as possible.... hard drive is dying

Well...problems

I burnt the CD and restarted computer only to find that the SeaTools for DOS immediately reported "No hard drives found" and "No controllers detected". Strange because the external drive was also attached by USB to the computer.

Forgive my ignorance but what is an image in backup terms? I am still used to the backups when you "copied" file by file and they were always available to be transferred to another computer or restored singly.

I've downloaded Reflect and am ready to go. But what should I choose, "Clone this disk" or "Image this disk"? Isn't there a Copy this disk option?

When I chose "Backup Files", which is what matters most it says not available in Free version... So, how do I back up files?

Thank you for your help!

Use image. A image is just everything. The paritionsize, partition type, label. Also all files, all file owners, permissions.

DOS normally can't use usb stuff. So external drivers can't be detected. Is internal disk a SATA-disk? If so... did you add DOS sata driver to the CD?

Hi

I've imaged drive C: Now I wonder what I have to do to restore it to another computer running on XP. I guess I have to download the same prog Reflect, right?

As for the drive I don't know if it is Sata. In the Device Manager the external drive is Sata but says nothing about the Samsung. I am attaching screen capture.

SeaTools for Windows says it is Pata-Sata...

DOS normally can't use usb stuff. So external drivers can't be detected. Is internal disk a SATA-disk? If so... did you add DOS sata driver to the CD?

No, I did not...

I thought of going ahaed and imaging drive D: but I get the impression that it will overwrite what I have just backed up from drive C: as the inforation in the box gives the same filename as before. I suppose I can change the name of the one already in the external drive, or is that going to mess up things when I want torestore?

Sorry about all this but it's been years since I did this kind of backup. In fact, I never did because the systems seem to do it automatically.

See attach and both files end the same 00-00
