What's the Best Anti-virus?

i have used ad aware and security essentials and have had both try to install legacy drivers for whatever and was never able to find a fix or anyone who did find a fix and the only fix that i found was to remove them. poorguy

I've no idea when you were using MSE, but I've used it for at least the past couple of years and have never had it try to install any drivers, or anything else for that matter apart from its own virus definitions and version updates. I'm not even sure how it would do so, it simply isn't the purpose of the program. I can't help wondering if you've had something else on your machine that was doing that, quite possibly something that deliberately had pop-up screens designed to look like MSE. Of course, Windows Updates will occasionally offer drivers but if you don't have it set on automatic update then they're easily declined.

hey a guy, yes i agree. it was just mentioned avg/avast/bitdefender were obsolete and that security essentials was the choice to use for the best real time defense according to zapp22. i believe that security essentials is good and i know it is hard for the software writers to keep up or current as malware and viruses come out. i have just had better luck with avg and avast then with security essentials and if something better was available i was wanting to give it a try. thanks for the reply. poorguy

Ahhh, sorry, I misunderstood. I certainly do not agree with that assessment. MSE is designed to detect threats that MS sees from it's user base that allows that info to be sent to MS. Certainly not a majority of Windows users I'd think. I'm not saying MSE won't work well for many users, but I don't think it superior as an Antivirus program, then the other, so called, obsolete programs

hey seffrid, i use to use mse a couple of years ago and 1 problem that i had was MPKSL files kept trying to run at startup. when i looked it up it says it is part of mse and stands for malware protection kernel support library. never could find out how to stop it. had the same problem with ad aware 10. i wound up removing both of them and no more problems. these antivirus programs were on 2 different desktop computers and no i was only running 1 antivirus program per computer.they may have fixed it by now but at the time i used them they had no solution for the problem. perhaps i will retry mse and see what happens. thanks. poorguy

hey a guy, i think most of the free antivirus programs do for the most part provide basic protection. with that and common sense web habits most are safe. hell there free so can't really complain. anytime that i caught a virus was due to my own stupidity. i also use malwarebytes free and superantispyware free and have not had any infections in a long time. i think the common sense is the best solution. i do like the small footprint and the lack of crapware in mse that the others seem to have. but here again they are free. thanks. poorguy

Obsolete because? They can't possibly catch everything new. The malware writers are very good at what they do. Beyond behavior analysis, there is no way any AV can have foreknowledge of what comes next. All they can do is react as quickly as possible, and make their programs detect any new methods used. Along with behavior analysis comes false positives. It's a constant battle. But they are not obsolete unless they stop adapting. A Guy

Well put and for my 2 cents worth it could be compared to a new chemical being made put on the market and then before it is recognised as dangerous it has already seriously hurt or killed someone.
At around 50,000 new malwares everyday how on earth can any security software possibly keep up with the infinite code combinations of these "products" in such numbers.
I think the security companies do a remarkable job considering and in my case Kaspersky extremely well but having said that it is still not fool or bullet proof, and why I use back up MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware and the like as every now and then scans and in suspicious slow downs etc as a near failsafe measure.
I did see someone mention using AVG and Avast post or two back and I think that that is where problems start to arise because of the conflicts between two AV run at the same real time modes.
Again having said that there are some anti malware programs I would not touch with a pointy stick let alone have on my machines because in my mind and little experience they are worse than not having anything at all.

This makes updating Flash a LOT easier for me.

I just ran the Active X .EXE installer
- Don't have the McAfee option to remember to uncheck.
- It runs a LOT faster than the "normal" installer.
- It doesn't delete the installer as part of the install process.

I have 5 of my own systems I have to update every month and it's a pita.
I also update some other systems via Teamviewer.
I can download to my PC and copy the installers to their PC.

hey icit2lol,malwarebytes free and superantispyware free are good. i use them myself. i agree about nothing being bullet proof. it does pay to be picky on free antivirus i just stick to what has worked for me. there are too many to choose from and try so i stick with what has worked for me. as said earlier most are good and yeah you only need 1 antivirus. mine are working i am happy. poorguy

ADW download from bleepingcomputer delete any rubbish found with themalware scans

*TIP it now comes with a bit of add on stuff now so take it slowly when you download it cos you don't want the rubbish and frankly I don't know why they did this. You usually are better off getting it fresh each time you use it

Yep now if you are not sure of what to delete when you run ADW then post back the report I usually delete everything but again if not sure post back and one of the crew will help out.
