I cannot wait until the 1TB ssd come down to like $300.

Man what a tempting offer. If I hadn't just spent a mint on a lens I'd definitely get one of these as a backup drive for my photos.

And yeah, I got a 256gig 840 Pro just shy of $200 last year. This is a great deal for a 500gig SSD drive, especially one of this quality.

Btw: for a backup drive, a 1TB SSHD is a better deal. For large data transfer it is nearly as fast as a SSD (I measured it) and you get 1TB for $90.

Well I actually have a 2TB drive as well, but when actively working on image edits, I download them to my 256 backup SSD drive, than move them over to the 2TB HD for temp storage until no longer needed, where they are then archived to one of many hot-swap drives.

I pretty much scanned all my negatives and slides and thus have images going all the way back to the early 80's

There are certainly many applications where an external SSD is very useful. I run my 6 virtual systems from a 240GB SSD that is attached via eSata. Works great because I can attach it to any of my systems either thru eSata or USB.

My point was for purely backup. For that I prefer the SSHD - much faster than a HDD.

Btw: I scanned in a lot of pictures too. The oldest ones are from 1936. That's when the house was built where I was born.
