Solved Moving from XP OE to Win 7 Live Mail

Using Win XP SP3 & OE 6

I'll be replacing my XP SP3 PC with a new Win 7 Home Premium PC in a couple of weeks and I have some email concerns.

I plan to use Live Mail (LM) on the new PC instead of any other email program. During my search for information, I learned that LM works on XP. If so, I'll download LM to the XP, let it gobble up my OE data/settings, and become accustomed to using it while I'm waiting for the Win 7 PC. Besides, it might be easier to transfer LM to LM on different PCs than OE to LM.

My concern now is what is the best way to transfer *all* LM data, not just the Address Book and Messages, from one PC to another. I've run across several discussions on this that have my head swimming, but I'll bet the definitive advice is here on this forum.

1. Is it true that I can install and run LM on XP SP3?
2. If so, is there a specific LM version that must be used/not used?
3. Can you direct me to a detailed procedure to transfer LM from one PC to another?

Feel free to offer any additional information or advice you think applies to my situation.

I don't know about running it on XP Ed but if you are using the same email address
ie [email protected] when you set up the WLM in 7 and add that address (ie default - you can have more) it should load all mail from that mail address.

If you can transfer over the contacts I am not sure but I did find this Can i install windows live mail on my XP? - Microsoft Community

Hi Ed,

First of all, get a Microsoft Account, called Outlook.com, store all your contacts on your new account, using .CSV file format to export / import them into WLM. Now export all your mail folders as in my PDF. (It will be slightly different wording.)
Use the Outlook.com account to sign-in to WLM. It will also add the account to WLM. When all it's folders have been downloaded, it can be safely removed if you don't want to use it. Your contacts will still be availble if the Outlook.com account is removed. Now add the mail account you want to use. View attachment WLM Export.pdf

Thanks for the quick response to my questions. I was able to download and install Live Mail on an old Windows XP SP3 Home Edition PC that's gathering dust around here. If it installs and runs on Home, I expect it would also on the Pro edition. I spent some time with it and also with Thunderbird and changed my mind (men are also allowed to do that, right?). I now plan to install Thunderbird on my new PC when it arrives. Who knows - after a few months I might change my mind again. Thanks again for your advice. You may hear from me again. Ed you only need to download Essentials anyway and it gives you the choice of what you want to download and install. Windows Essentials - Download Windows Live Essentials just check the ones you want I only ever use the WLM and Photo gallery see my pic

Thanks ... actually, that's what I did. My previous post was misleading. In fact, I don't think it's even possible to download just one part of Essentials - at least from the Windows download page. EdP
