DVD player (at the TV) will not read External HDD

Hello

I decided to rip some of my DVDs and put them on an external drive as it is much easier to have them connected to the DVD Player (the one connected to the TV).

But it will not read the External HDD. It is in Fat32 like my USB Pin, which it reads just fine.

Is it because of the size of the external partition? (1,5TB) that is the only difference I can see on the external HDD and the USB Pin.

The external HDD have its own power source...

Why don't you disconnect the DVD player and connect the HDD directly to the TV?

When you say you have ripped some of your DVD's, does that mean you actually have the DVD discs. If so, why not just put the DVD straight into the DVD player & watch them on the TV.
I may be confused here, so steer me in the right direction if need be.

Hi there
Easier way - just rip DVD's to HDD ISO via AnyDVD (or use Handbrake to convert to MKV/MP4/AVI).

Now use something like VLC remote to stream to TV - you can use your PHONE as a remote controller for VLC.
(You need a Smart TV though for that).

I'm not sure if older DVD players or TV's will play from EXTERNAL HDD's - however if it plays from a USB stick it should play from a USB disk.

Check the Video format on the USB Stick -- I doubt if you've ripped to ISO. Test by copying the file to the HDD from the USB and see if it plays.

You need to check the specs of the DVD player to see what it will read from a USB stick. I have an older Sony Blue-ray player and all it will read from USB sticks is photos and MP3s. It will not read videos of any format.

Yes, I have the DVD's, how would you have me to rip them otherwise ?? and yes I own every singe one of the DVD's, I am no pirate..!! I guess that is what you suspect...

It is a lot easier for me to rip my collection and have them on 1 External drive, rather than have to switch the DVD every time I change movie, and if I can get this to work, I do not need to have my covers standing in my living room... So its both lazyness and it will give me some space for other stuff.

Now can we move on from the accusation's ? that was not the reason I asked for help.

It works fine from all the USB sticks I tested it with, that is why it seems confusing to me it wont recognize my external HDD, and I am using Fat32 on both. I was thinking if it could be related to the size of the partition on the disk?

im using the Avi format as that seems to be the one I can read in the DVD-player

Our portable HD loaded with MPEG and MP4 movies is NTFS format.
(I cannot find a movie thumb-drive to verify format)

We also have an external mains powered HD ... NTFS .. of movies
The USB connection from the mains powered HD is about 2metres (6ft) long
I know USB connectivity and performance can be hindered by cable length.

TV is about 8 months old Samsung (our 20 month old Samsung was not as accommodating)

Just my thoughts ...

I certainly was NOT suggesting that you had pirated the DVD's & I did not mention pirating at all. I was only suggested using the DVD's directly with your DVD player is that it seemed the easiest option & probably the least troublesome in the long run.
