Solved MalwareBytes 2.0.1 taking forever to scan

I don't think it should be necessary after paying for a public release of a product to go to another forum to ask for help. The product should not have been released in the first place.
If a developer can't make the product work as advertised it should be withdrawn and refunds given all round.

@ThrashZone

If you wish to run a full scan 10 times a day please be my guest. No one is saying you cannot run one if you want to. I said I find that for myself it's not needed.

Are there issues with the latest version - yes. Are we working on them - Yes. Did you participate in the Beta and voice your opinions then before release - No.

Our forum has probably just a tad more information and support available than here and where I would recommend you actually seek support, but that's up to you as well.

I'm not here to argue either. If you want help come get help - we're certainly willing to help.

Thank you.

If you represent mabm we are in allot of trouble,

Me testing a beta product is not at all my duty it's yours and who ever feels the need to do so,

I'll agree with Andrew,
I have corresponded with mabm via email,
It was un-fruitful to say the least,
They are in denial,
I'm Unwilling to test 2.0
My world-my choice,
Cheers.

Exaggerating the usage of a full scan is not very realistic but is pretty funny,
Once ever week or 2 is not uncommon practice.
Rootkit will be unused for the obvious reasons.

@AdvancedSetup

I for one plus many many others on this forum have been using and promoting Malwarebytes Anti Malware for years as the best. I still think it's the best. I have been having few of the problems others are having but I do have some problems.
That is probably because their are so many configurations of systems to deal with.
The dispute is coming from Malwarebytes past performance.
Many expect the quality always to be of the highest in the land. We don't expect problems no mater if it is new or not from Malwarebytes.
That is a unrealistic expectation in my opinion.

Things we know.
1. Malwarebytes 2.0.1.1004 is new.
2. We all expect the best from Malwarebytes.
3. We all are having problems of some kind with the new Malwarebytes.
4. We expect the problems to be fixed soon.
--------------------------------------------------
I for one and I believe many others on this forum will work with you to solve these problems if you so desire. The problem is the expertise that the folks at Malwarebytes is way above my pay grade. I like many others can only report the problems we are having. I know I don't have the knowledge to help with programing such a complicated piece of software.

I have been using the Free version for years and the last couple of years the Professional version on two computers. I intend to keep using the new version awaiting for update repairs after working the bugs out.

I have posted on this forum many times that; if Malwarebytes made a all in one (Anti virus, anti malware, anti spyware, anti rootket,ect.) I would buy it. I base this statement on the previous quality of Malwarebytes and I do expect the quality standards to always be the very best.

If you want to know the problems I perceive I have just ask.

Please read what I posted. I said that I would help you, not our help desk. Great group of guys but obviously you were not happy with their support. Again, no disrespect but going back and forth here like this is not productive for either of us. Please come to our forum and stop playing and I will personally assist you. I will not be posting back to this topic. [except possibly to assist someone that actually does want help]

Thank you again.

I fail to see how your going to fix rootkit no offence but I'm happy with 1.75.0.1300 for now,
I'll give 2.0 a while the earth will not stop spinning because I'm not on 2.0 ;)

No poor attitude at all. There are a few posters here that simply have a mindset that no matter what is said or done will not please them so there is no use in trying. As they say "haters are gonna hate" and you can't change that.

If and when you really want help I'm over on our site and willing to help. If you simply want to continue to complain and not actually ask for real help that's up to you as well. I can only provide advise on where to get help because you're not going to get help like that here due to the restrictions of this site preventing us from helping you at that level.

Wow, I must say the above says it all , I just cannot believe what I am reading , this type of talk is never acceptable and would not be tolerated in most business environments , no way , no how period.

And from someone in a management type position, are you kidding ? There are no haters here , these people have been die hard supporters for many many years and are responsible for countless Mbam customers.

You Sir, need to accept that your new product is a big disappointment and you guys need to do everything possible to make it right and prove that Mbam is still a top notch product and worthy of purchasing .

I am a lifetime license holder and I have recommend Mbam to a ton of people but with this new version I feel ripped off to be honest .

@UserNameIssues

There have been reported issues with this and due to the complexity of differences between systems I cannot say for sure that it will be corrected in the next build for you but some of our Experts and in my own testing show the scans to be much faster now. Here is a scan I did earlier tonight with an updated build of the program that is not public yet but will be soon. Once it is released and you test it out and do continue to have issue please open a ticket on the forum and I'll be happy to assist you.

In reviewing some of the other posts here on the sevenforums I think the FAQ should help to answer some questions.

Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions

Below is a Threat Scan (used to be called Quick Scan) and I'll go ahead and run a Custom Scan and do the equivalent of a Full Scan and then post back that log so you can see the time taken.

Hi AdvancedSetup; Happy Easter.

Some information that might be helpful.
**Full scan including rootkit.
Total time 30:54
Objects Scanned: 331160
Objects infected: 0
---------------------
The scan goes very quick until 70259 file, time 10:40
C:\Windows\Web\Walpaper\Scenes\img27.jpg
Then is does nothing until time 24:13. Stays on file 70259.
Then it goes very fast again until done at time 30:54.
When the scan is working fast about 60% CPU and when sitting on file 70259 CPU is 3 to 5 %.
The .jpg is a OEM Windows 7 built in picture.
If I remove a picture then the system just sit on the next Windows 7 picture in line and does nothing for about half the scan time.
It does not stop for any of my own installed pictures only Windows 7 OEM pictures.
As you can see almost half of the scan time is sitting on OEM pictures doing nothing monitoring Task Manager Performance.
This may or may not be normal but it does it on both of my computers.

When a scan is started you can not stop the scan until it is complete. I think this is probably normal.
Malwarebytes doesn't know whether I'm stopping the scan or a infection is trying to stop the scan. So it just keeps scanning.
I really don't have a problem with that because if I ask for a scan that is what I want done.

**Could you reply so I at least know you read my posts.
Thanks Layback Bear.

Just to clarify my previous post, it seems different people are concerned about or may be having very different issues . I myself don't have any issues with the new Mbam's scanning speed , yes it takes a little longer but that's fine with me .

What bothers me is the mediocre at best overall performance of detecting malware and actually getting rid of it effectively. That is the main argument in the Softpedia review , it found the new Mbam to be far less effective than the old at detection and especially removal .

Is there any other independent analysis that would prove differently , if so I would be extremely interested to read about it .

Thank you

@UserNameIssues

Once it is released and you test it out and do continue to have issue please open a ticket on the forum and I'll be happy to assist you...........
Thanks for the feedback.

I use v1.75 on the host computer... so I don't have any issues that need solving.

The videos were made using a fresh (fully patched) install of W7 into a VirtualBox VM. Only VB's Guests Additions was installed. No other software or antivirus was installed. That testing and those videos were just meant to help document what happens (or does not happen) during those long (20+ minutes) pauses. As long as this is a know issue, then I'll just watch for the solution in future builds.

Thanks again for your time.

Ah. Those look like the specs from my machine. With MBAM 1.75, the same full scan on all drives took only 4 1/2 hours, give or take a few minutes. That's quite a lot less than 23+ hours and it still not being finished. Also, all but the 160 GB drive are around 50% full. I would say at most, there is less than 1TB of data.

Overall, the performance of MBAM 2.0.1.1004 is significantly worse that its predecessor with the rootkit option enabled. I haven't had the opportunity to run the full scan without the rootkit option enabled yet, but I am doing so as I write this. I'll report on the length of time it takes tomorrow.

Happy Easter to all.

Yes I read your post Layback Bear and yes there have been some reports of certain files that can cause a slowdown or freeze. Data corruption can also do this - the updated version is hopefully a little better but not sure we'll be able to completely eliminate or not but we're trying.

@Mellon Head
Agreed that the Anti-Rootkit scanner you're using is slow. The updated one I'm using is faster, but see below in that it will never be a fast scan like a Threat / Quick Scan is.

Yes, I am using an updated build that is not currently available to the public but should be soon (it is available to our Experts group) and yes there are improvements in the new Anti-Malware scan times. Most hopefully should see faster scan times with it once it is made available to the public. In fact there was another version released internally since I scanned with my version that is supposed to improve some other items in the program.

As for the Softpedia review as with most it is very lacking in detail and what was really scanned and used was not fully detailed. We do not hide the fact that we do not detect older infections, never have and probably never will. Once we stop seeing infections in the wild they are usually pulled from our database and left up to your antivirus to deal with.

I know some of you may not agree and that is certainly your prerogative however I see no technical reason for doing Anti-Rootkit scans on a routine basis and certainly not daily. I've been doing Enterprise level computer support now for well over 20 years and I play with infections and to date have only gotten infected once by accident. I've been a lead support engineer for the security of over 130,000 desktops as well as thousands of servers and in my time as a lead we never had a single break out.

Probably no harm in doing daily extensive scans for a mechanical drive as none of them seem to last the 10+ years that they used to but doing extensive daily work on most SSD drives can potentially greatly reduce their life span.

One of our Experts did post a log of multiple mechanical drives and Terabytes of data and the scan time for an Anti-Rootkit scan was nearly cut in half. It was still a long time of over 10 hours but I'm not sure what else to compare it to. I've done full scans with terabytes of data using both Symantec and Kaspersky antivirus and both products took almost 48 hours to complete the scans. I have not tried to compare similar scan time of antivirus vs Malwarebytes but again we're not the same product type and don't claim to be and I've always said that antivirus is better at flat file scanning than we are. With no load points and an old infection we certainly can miss something that your antivirus would probably pick up. We operate at our best on a live infection in Normal Windows mode. If you use Safe Mode that too is not an optimal method for our program to do it's job.

Does Malwarebytes put its products through a rigorous QAQC process prior to releasing new versions to the public?

I recall a similar fiasco a while back, also related to an update if Im not mistaken?

Software developers really need to keep an eye on the quality of their software if they wish to retain their customers.
