Brand new microsoft desktop 800 Keyboard and mouse issue.

I just got my desktop 800 and after setting it up am not getting anything from the Keyboard or Mouse?
batteries are brand new, when plugging in the USB receiver it said the drivers installed properly?
cannot get either to do anything ie, move cursor, scroll, etc
I dont know what could be causing this? everything checks out?
UPDATE:
seems from further google searching this is a very common problem and is due to faulty USB recievers.
Guess i will have to return the product for refund or exchange.:(
