Hello everybody, this is my story :
I bought this laptop 10 months ago, and 3 days ago i start having two bsod's. First time, i had the atikmpag.sys bsod ( "attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed" ) when i was starting games, so i guessed it is because the other vid card did not start ( i have dual graphics ). I reinstalled the Windows, formatted everything, installed new drivers and now I`m receiveing other bsod, sgfxk64.sys with the same message as first bsod ( " attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed " ). Both have the 0x116 tehnical information. I have to mention that i receive this bsod's only if i start playing newer games like DayZ or Counter Strike:Global Offensive. Also, i have to mention that i overclocked the AMD Card to 780mhz core clock and 950 memory clock for 4 months.

My laptop's configuration is the following :
HP Pavilion G6-2303sq
i5-3230M 2.6 Ghz
6GB RAM
Radeon HD 7670M & Intel HD 4000 Graphics

and the OS is Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

I reinstalled the drivers from the internet because this laptop came without any driver dvd, and took me some time to find the amd driver. It could be a driver problem or worse? because my main problem seems to appear when my radeon switches on
I need help. Thanks in advance.

Hi kelvingl.

Both the crash dumps are pointing to SMSC WDDM Graphics Display Driver Service (c:\windows\system32\drivers\sgfxk64.sys).

Apparently it is not something that you need. Better you uninstall it.

Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall Daemon Tools at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from Disk-Tools.com, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :

  • Double click to open it.
  • Click this button only:
  • 2012-12-13_224441.jpg
  • If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.
As you are getting BSODs, you should stop overclocking and run all the hardware components like CPU, GPU and RAM to their default settings.

Let us know the results.

Hello Arc, thanks for the answer.

I installed windows 8.1 after the first post, and downloaded all the drivers from the hp support site. In 2 days i received no bsod, but something similar, like pc-freezing. In some games, after loading from the menu, when the gpu's should switch, at that time pc just freezes. I have to mention that i downloaded that SPTD, but my Uninstall button was grey. I don't have any d-tools or similar programs installed, and i do not overclock, i don`t know was in my mind to do that anyway.

also: i found something weird: sometimes my games go into taskbar and i can't switch to them anymore, even from task manager

Thanks for the help

Hi kelvingl,

Before any further troubleshooting takes place, I'd like you to manually run Windows Update (WU) until there is nothing offered. Make sure you look in the optional updates and select all drivers from the to be installed.
This will make sure that all drivers and other WU are installed before trying to solve an issue.

You probably had a better base of drivers when you install Win8 - but then chose to visit the HP site and download drivers. That wasn't necessary and might be contributing to the issue(s) on your machine.

So, the first order of business is to "stabilize" your system with drivers and installing all updates from WU. I's a shame, but you might have to roll back drivers to get the best ones from WU - I'm not sure. See what you get without rolling back first.

Then you can start troubleshooting if necessary. The trick to finding a solution to an issue is
A known set of software
making one or two changes and testing.

Installing Win8 and putting HP supplied drivers over top of Windows supplied drivers was a big change.
So you'll need to get to a good base though Windows Update.

Go through the WU exercise and see how the machine works.

Go through the WU exercise and see how the machine works.

hello, and thanks for the answer.

i did that, but no solving. my laptop stucks when the graphic card should start running. i can't move the mouse and the laptop gets freezed. i reinstalled the 8.1 win, cleanly installing the graphic driver again, everything seems alright in device manager, but i still have the freeze problem. sometimes i can run games without any problem, sometimes can't. if i can extract any info about crashes tell me and i`ll do, i`m quite disperate. also, should i run any gpu test to test my hardware? maybe because the short overclock, something got broken, or any driver conflicts, i don`t know.... i`m tired of reinstalling the OS and the gpu driver.....

le : my laptop get freezed, but no bsod.. i must manually shut down

le2 : an friend told me about a probable cause: the gpu gets too hot so the cpu shuts down. that explains what happens to me. also, i did a test : right before my laptop gets freezed, all the 4 cpu's go to 100%, then the laptop gets freezed. also, after the freeze, the laptop take some time to even start bios, sign that the processor doesn`t start imo. how can i deal with this? what should i do? i already bought an cooler for the laptop. i have to say that before buying the cooler, i had no problem with bsod's and freezes, and now, 2 weeks after i bought it, i get only bsod's and freezes. the cooler has no driver, its connected via usb like others, so its definetely not a driver problem. it could be about dust? a dust-clear should solve all my problems?

Cleaning the air vents is a good idea, see:
Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating

Follow this tutorial to provide the current operating environment of your machine.

Please also run the following:

These two reports provide a lot of information that might be helpful in solving the freezing issue.

It seems as though you are no longer experiencing the BSOD and that's good.

Thanks

thanks for the answer. i m done with trying things by myself, i think i`ll go with it at an service, because seems that suddenly the keyboard is not working anymore, and the driver does not identify the keyboard hardware.. maybe the laptop was overheating to much that could have burn something on the keyboard hardware? i`m so mad right now that i ll throw it by the window if anything more occurs

thanks again for your effort helping me

i`m back again. i solved the keyboard issue with a simple battery removal. i did not went to a laptop service because i may lose my warranty, and my warranty does not cover the dust removal :(. so i did what Slartybart told me to do from the 2nd step.

Please update your System specs - it threw me off.
You're running Win8.1 Pro according to the data you posted.

I'll keep digging in the Speccy output to see if anything becomes apparent.

First glance:
AMD Hydra, do you have more than one monitor?
HYDRAVISION - For RADEON and Mobile ATI Products

If not, launch Catalyst Install Manager (CIM)
Control Panlel > Programs and Features > AMD Catalyst > Uninstall > Custom
Uninstall
Hydra
and
Catalyst Control Center (CCC) - only used for overclocking, which you said you did once, but stopped OCing

I'm not certain Hydra is included in CIM, but that's the logical place.

After that, follow this tutorial to limit the startup items (2nd step of trouble shooting in the tutorial is to limit services, then add them back in one at a time to try and find out if a particular service is causing an issue)
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

Still digging.

It's interesting to note that the 14.4 package mentions AHCI issues, but the mobility package does not. Speccy shows the std MS AHCI controller - I'll look into that later. I think it should be an Intel controller. Tis is probably why AMD took their AHCI controller out of the GPU package.

hello, and thanks for helping me

i did that plus removing hydra, but the problem still persist. plus, sometimes, after the freeze i receive the whea_uncorrectable_error with the following log in the event manager :
Code:
A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: Internal Timer Error
Processor APIC ID: 2

The details view of this entry contains further information.

this happens only when i start to play a game, when the radeon switches on but not always ( for example, yesterday i had no problem with bsod's or freezing )

if i could provide further information, please tell me, i`m so tired of this issue

big thanks again, i appreciate it so much

I'm not sure what to tell you.

A few things I did determine
1) The std AHCI probably should be Intel. Download and install the softpaqs from HP
Intel Chipset: Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver - HP Pavilion g6-2303sq Notebook PC | HP® Support
Intel IME: Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver - HP Pavilion g6-2303sq Notebook PC | HP® Support

2) The AMD graphics softpaq includes the Intel graphics driver (8.15.10.2669), but HP offers an updated version of the Intel graphics driver (10.18.10.3277)
You said you installed the AMD driver from HP, I suggest updating the Intel driver
Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver - HP Pavilion g6-2303sq Notebook PC | HP® Support

3) Cannot create d3d device I don't play many games and I've never used Steam, but there are a few references:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1740-IMNO-4856
Basically says: Windows Update and make sure .NET is up-to-date. It also says to update your graphics driver.
The clincher might be this:
If the crash persists, set the following launch option:
◾Go to Steam's Library.
◾Right-click on the affected game.
◾Go to Properties > General > Set launch options...
◾Type in -dxlevel 81.
◾Click OK.

Note: if you are attempting to play Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, you must set your launch option to -dxlevel 90 instead.

There is also this on the Steam forum which mentions running the game in a lower resolution.
Failed to create D3D device! - Steam Users' Forums

AS long as you're certain that you've updated Windows, that you have the Intel drivers installed (above) and the graphics drivers installed, then there's not much more I can help you with to solve the issue.

and.... if the Steam references don't help .. I'm stumped!

Post back if anything changes after you verify and update the drivers or apply the suggestions from the Stem site.

If you get another BSOD, please follow the BSOD posting instructions so other members can analyze the dump(s).

Thanks,

Bill

did everything you said, except installing Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver - HP Pavilion g6-2303sq Notebook PC | HP® Support, because at the setup i was told 'you don`t meet the minimum requirements'

well, reinstalling ( i think for the 20th time in 1 month ) the latest driver from amd solved the issue with d3d.
also, i updated each driver to the last update via device manager

everything went well for about a day, when i faced again the freeze issue. but, this time i found that the error 'Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.' causes me these freezes, i know this because sometimes the display flicks and then the laptop freezes. sometimes goes black and back and shows me the error, sometimes just freezes

thanks again

I'm still stumped, but I can ask for current information about your system. You've changed some things and the precious reports are out of date.

The first two you've done befre. The 3rd one is a new request: Doesn't Do Squat (DDS)-build a report that contains information similar to the other two tools, but it might pick up some piece of information that the other two do not.

Hello.
I have not been replying because the issue disappeared for a while. It seemed to work some time cleaning some dust using an air-compressor, laptop causing only some resets of videocard driver while playing games for 1-2 minutes.

Now it seems that the laptop is causing laptop either a freeze with no bsod, either a bsod containing WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. I have monitored the temperatures, and they occur when its temperature is around 60°C.

the speccy snapshot : http://speccy.piriform.com/results/p2XgnRAHiyqnGuG2kosTsYG
the dm report is attached below
i could not run the DDS, reporting this error: "DDS is not meant to run in 'Compatibility Mode'." , and i can't find any Run as Administrator in properties.
aditionally, i ran a Windows Memory Diagnostic and an IntelBurnTest and no issues were found
also i ran a System File Checker with some issues listed in a log below, in CBS.rar

thank you
