As a matter of interest now I have the WinDBG installed the BSOD files automatically open so I am making progress - just need to get onto what the errors actually are.

I'll update the OP to also cover the new version of WinDBG, as soon as I have installed it for myself and when I have some spare time.

I have installed WinKits on the main machine now but think I have done something wrong somewhere because opening some attached stuff results in the message giving options for programs do do that with - all pay for stuff??

Oops forgot the framework stuff

Hey John,

Did you set the file type association as explained in option two of step 2?
If you try to open .dmp files without setting the file type association you will get a window asking you with what program to open it with. You can fix this by either following option one of step two of the tutorial, in which you open dump files via WinDBG, or by following option two of step two, in which you set the default file type association of .dmp files to WinDBG, so that every time you double click on a dump file it will automatically open it with WinDBG.

To set the file type association you can either follow step two of option two of my tutorial (Archie's tut here shows how to do it more elaborate with pictures), or you can do the following:

1. Click on rb: and navigate to the Control Panel.
2. Once there, click on Programs and then on Default Programs.
3. Now click on Set Association and wait for the list to load.
4. Once loaded, search for .dmp (dump files).
5. Click on .dmp to highlight it, and then click on Change Program in the upper right corner.
6. Now I have Win 8.1 so this might be a tad different then on Win7, but with me I get a pop-up with a list of programs that I can select. In that list, simply click on Windows GUI Symbolic Debugger (or WinDBG or however it is displayed) and click on OK next.
7. Now the Set Association list should reload itself. Check if .dmp has the WinDBG icon next to it, and if so, close all programs and restart your machine.
   That's it

Not sure what you mean with this.
Do you mean that when you try to open a dump file you get to chose a program, but instead of the regular menu you have to select a program that you have to pay for? Do you maybe have a screenshot of it?

Nommy no mate I went for the option 2 copy / paste that command line into the command window, and it says it doesn't recognise that command.
I tried the other option but it just opens with the window in the pic.

By the by I must ask should I be using X64 or X86 WinDBG? I am just a bit confused now as the laptop just does the loading of the files but not in the way that is posted (blue background) and is always at the very end of the load??

The *******.msi is the pay for stuff.

Hmh weird.

Instead of using the link I provided, you could do the following;
If you have a 64bit machine, go into the x64 folder, scroll to the bottom, right click on WinDBG and select Properties.
In the General tab, copy the entire but after Location and paste that into CMD. Manually type "\windbg.exe -AI" behind it and make sure that the entire part save for -AI is between quotation marks.
Now click enter and it should work.

If you have a 32bit system, do the same but go into the x86 folder instead.

If that doesn't work I recommend following Archie's tutorial linked in my previous post

This is what I get Nommy and mate do you think I should uninstall it and start from scratch? At the moment my machine is doing some odd things I have to admit.

Aah I see the problem
The file path should be between quotations and there should be a space before -AI.
Try that and I'm sure that it will work

Nommy have done that and I tried a DMP file off a reply and still get the message followed by that ref to stuff that can open it. I think the only way I ma going to do this is to uninstall the whole thing and start form scratch.
Sorry mate but I know I have must have done something wrong along the way.

Hmh, that's weird.
I have sent Arc a message if he could look at your problem since I have no clue as to what's causing it

Hi John.

Follow this path ....

Start> All Programs > Windows Kits > Debugging tool for windows (x64)

When you are there, right click on WinDbg (x64) .... that is here ....

​

Now click "Properties" from the context menu. When the properties dialog will be open, you will notice that the "Target" is highlighted. Copy that target and paste it in your reply.

Arc bear with me but I get as far are as that marked screen but the context menu I can only think is a right click on the X64 to get Properties and what I get has no context mentioned
