Hi,

Does Java interfere with Flash?

Ever since I updated Java yesterday I haven't been able to watch most YouTube videos. Is that a coincidence?

Because my PC is saying it is the Adobe Flash plugin for Firefox that is causing the error.

I have not updated adobe Flash for a while. But apparently I have 14 which is the latest one.

I would like to uninstall that and install a previous one if poss.

1. How do I find out if I have auto updates set for Flash please?
2. And is Java anything to do with the problem?
3. If so how can I solve it please?

thanks a lot

PS sorry for posting in the wrong place. Thanks mod for moving it.

Hi,
Java effects everything internet related that's most people will say why do you think you need Java from oracle ?
Mostly java is just a pain in the rear end,
Oracle is on a quarterly update schedule making it the biggest security risk to have on a machine,

Hi ThrashZone
Thank you for your reply. I am sorry but I do not know if you answered my 3 questions or not, becasue I am not a techie, and even after visiting the links I still do not know exactly what java is, or if it affects Flash.

I appreciate the links and instructions, but I can't follow them until I know WHY I am doing what the instructions say, or I won't be wiser next time.

I got the impression your instructions are from a security point of view, and that is important of course, but my main objective is:

I want YouTube videos to work!

How do I do that please?

Sorry if you have already answered my questions and I didn't understand. Please could you explain in laymans terms?

thanks

Hi,

thanks I read the article that says you should disable Java, and I went to uninstall, but it only has Java Update installed.

Surely that is not java itself? But just the updater?

I also don't understand how we don't need it if like you say: "Java affects everything internet related"

Will I still be able to watch YouTube videos with it disabled?

And will uninstalling the "Java Update" thwart the security vulnerability?

Also I went here to find out what java actually is here:
https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/whatis_java.xml

and although it's from java itself, it kind of implies we all need it, so I don't understand. I work fulltime online and use a lot of multimedia, especially lots of YouTube tutorial videos. Don't I need java?

thanks

Hi,
Sorry I'll explain a bit more,
Please use the last link first to get rid of any temporary files accumulated,
With the prior instructions,
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/

Once that's done,
Uninstall any Sun Oracle - java listed in Uninstall a program,
Modern browser like Internet explorer 10 or 11 do not need Java or flash player for that matter all you need is to open Internet explorer and go to youtube,
There's is of course a flashplayer for internet explorer but it usually only necessary if your on a website that uses flash player instead of modern html5
Which you can download flashplayer from Adobe at anytime

No problem,
Once you get rid of Java,
You can check these two links out to straiten out flash player,
Just use the instructions for Firefox instead of Internet explorer ;)
Although it's best to deal with both browsers,
Verify flash is installed,
http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html?promoid=ISMRY
Uninstall flash if needed,
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

There is a free program that will give you a heads up when updates are available for flash player and other utilities you have installed on your computer,
Free Computer Security - Personal Software Inspector (PSI) - Secunia
Although flash is supposed to always automatically check for updates it doesn't always do that,
Cheers.

Thanks ThrashZone,

I downloaded the Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer and ran that.

I clicked the check Flash link and I do have the latest version.

I looked in Control Panel > Uninstal programs like you said, and there was no "Sun Oracle".

But there was a "Java 7 Update 55" (129mb)

1. Should I get rid of this?

2. Do I now not have Java on my PC?

thanks

Hi yes I would uninstall java 7....
You should also refer to this to confirm no other older version are there,
http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/remove_olderversions.xml

If you play allot of games would be the only time you might need java installed and I would wait and see how many of them say you need java before downloading it again,

I believe the security link here,
http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2013/01/java-zero-day-again-time-to.html
http://blogs.technet.com/b/mmpc/archive/2013/04/16/how-to-protect-your-computer-against-dangerous-java-applets.aspx
In a nut shell they recommend and so do I that if you need java make sure it's disabled when you don't need it,
Like I said prior only some games require it,
Everyday browsing and youtube stuff does not need java enabled or installed for that matter,

After the above please reset your browsers,
Reset Firefox,

See a tutorial here to Reset Internet explorer,

After Resetting ie9 or 10,
I would add this to the tutorials process
