I am strict when it comes to family and computers. I put my foot down and force my family to run what I deem necessary on their computers. Is that the right thing to do? Of course not...but ask them when the last time they have had a crash, virus, spyware, etc and I guarantee you it won't be in the last 4 years...
Don't worry though...I also see the opportunity to educate them as well. They know nothing about advanced OS topics BUT they can browse safely and update their computer regularly without additional consultation. That in itself is an accomplishment and is sufficient for the average user
