I am strict when it comes to family and computers. I put my foot down and force my family to run what I deem necessary on their computers. Is that the right thing to do? Of course not...but ask them when the last time they have had a crash, virus, spyware, etc and I guarantee you it won't be in the last 4 years...

Don't worry though...I also see the opportunity to educate them as well. They know nothing about advanced OS topics BUT they can browse safely and update their computer regularly without additional consultation. That in itself is an accomplishment and is sufficient for the average user

If it took so long to put in 7 why then replace it with vista?
Put the damn 64bit on the laptop(because i GUARANTEE that in a month or so she will ask from you again to put a 7 on her laptop...typical...)

Wow. I find this amusing.

This is not the happiest of situations (well, it is now).

This is what I would have done:
My system also has Vista on her laptop (32 bit though) and she wouldn't know the difference between Seven or Vista, let alone the x64 vs x86 crap.

If she asked me to put Seven on it, fine (I would probably have charged her though, I am really busy. My time is not free). If she didn't like it, then I would put Vista back on there. If she wants it buggy, fine. Not my problem.

The other thing was that she really thought that x64 needed to be on her computer (which was wrong). You could explain the difference to her, but from my experience, when someone is that set in their ways trying to help them out is stupid. Give them back what they want, they will be happier with it. Eventually, they may realize that what you told them was true, then they will come back and ask for it.

There is NOTHING 64 bit can get you with 3 gigs except bugs. I tried it and scanned to find that the only program I was running that benefitted from the 64 bit O.S. was Internet Explorer and it had been buggy every since 64 install. McAfee is a bloatware infection just like Norton so put Avast free on there and she will benefit greatly from that alone: feather-lite vs. bag of rocks.

Windows 7 is the greatest invention since the computer. Light as a butterfly, quick like a bee.

Take the laptop away for a few hours and say, yes I put 64-bit Win7 on there =)

You made the right choice. Either put 4 gb of ram in there and install 64 bit w7 or leave it as is and explain to her that w/o 4 gb or more of ram on board, x64 is not the best option and x86 is better in that situation.

A nice technical justification for your actions could be as follows ....

Given her stated usage patten for the laptop ...

• She will need to run a 32 bit browser to enable flash and thus a more enjoyable web experience
• As this browser would have to use the 32 bit emulation to run in the 64 bit Operating system.
• running the browser in a native 32 bit browser is more efficient and therefore the best use of her system

This is why i don't screw with family computers. It's just not worth the headache in the end. I used to build custom computers for the inlaws and so forth, but not anymore. It's not worth my time. Instead, i'll gladly donate $100 towards the purchase of an HP, Gateway, Dell, Compaq, Acer or any other thing they want to buy.
