Solved Unable to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7

Hello, I am trying to perform an upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate. But I get this error when I press upgrade.

Windows Vista™ Ultimate cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”.

Are you trying to upgrade from Vista 32 bit OS to Win 7 64 bit OS? You can't upgrade from 32 to 64 bit, that must be a complete new install.

Yes it's 32-bit to 32-bit

Is Vista fully updated? Check now for Updates and install all Important and Optional. After reboot check again until there are no more offered. Check a day later.

Try unchecking everything in msconfig>Startup and >Services (after Hiding all MS Services) and if necessary uninstall your AV. Reboot to try again.

Run SFC and check for infection in Troubleshooting Windows 7,
same as for Vista.

It was a clean install, so I will update and report back

Doing an upgrade from Vista will only give you problems, better to do a clean install with your Windows 7 Upgrade disc

I know it will, but this isn't a machine I will use daily it's more of my mess around machine
