Yeah--it may be that higher prices can be charged in Korea partially because Samsung retailers in Korea can get away with it---they may realize that local Koreans are willing to pay more for Samsung in the name of "supporting the local company". Maybe something cultural too--I have no idea if Koreans generally feel better about themselves for buying a domestic brand. At one time, US car buyers might have said that about GM or Ford, but they got over it for the most part when faced with declining quality.

If only it was that cheap here in Korea, for some odd reason Samsung products are 50% more expensive even though Samsung is a Korean company! It is over the equivalent of $200 here. At least there is no sales tax here. I should have bought a SSD in the US

How are they able to get away with it?

Are other similar products available from other manufacturers at much lower cost ?

Is there some kind of barrier which prevents a grey market - logistical/regulatory difficulties in importing perhaps , or very high import taxes?

The problem about Korea is that it is hard to get any computer parts that are imported and most Koreans only know about technology from companies like Samsung or LG and they only care to buy from them since they are local companies. Most young people here these days don't even know what the Apple II is since most people use Android and Windows. There could be high importing taxes because many food products from the US is 2x or even 3x the price but I just think it is because for things other than electronics, Koreans do like imported things from Europe and North America. But Korean fruits are still expensive anyway though.

It is the same for cars here in Korea too. Most people have a Hyundai or Kia and sometimes an occasional premium brand such as Audi or Mercedes-Benz.

The cheapest 256GB Crucial SSD for a few cents over $100 ($102.99 to be exact) that I have seen. Requires promo code EMCYTZG766.

This is not their very fastest model but it will do nicely for installing the OS. A 4K random read at up to 85,000 IOPS is pretty handsome.
