Quickly look at the bench review onto a core i7 5960X, and it blows charts quite well, even if the i7 4960X seems quicker in on some benchmarks.

So looks with 2 more cores and less speed GHz it does the job well.
A nearly 195watt in burn test....

Well as well as it does on benchmarks now, let me remind everyone, this is new technology and all of the BIOS's are basically Betas even if they don't say so. In about 3 or 4 months, there will be more mature BIOS's that will improve performance significantly. Also remember this is the first time DDR4 has been used and they are still learning how it interacts with the board and other hardware. That will get ironed out too, in time. The rig will do nothing but get faster and faster. Overclocking will improve too.

Oh yes Steve you are correct.
Their is still a learning curve on this new stuff.
I remember over clocking my i4820-E. It's a strange over clocker but with time they all get figured out.

It's been a frustrating week, never enough time to complete my new build.

I'm hoping that tonight I can at least get the new mobo and cooler installed in the case, maybe even install Windows.

Kent, if your old computer is still running, use http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/135077-windows-7-installation-transfer-new-computer.html and transfer the whole OS and Programs. It works very well. Be sure to read the whole tut. You will have to reactivate and install the new drivers. I've done it before and it works very well. It basically just strips all drivers out of the installation so when you first boot up on the new machine, it's just like a clean install except everything is already there, including your account. During set up just name the new account test, then log into your old account and delete test account. Install your drivers and any updates and you should be in business. Just a suggestion.

It's not the installation of Windows that's the giant PITA, it's all the other software. Of course everyone knows that but you just can't relate to it until you're doing it yourself.

I don't think I posted this here, but here's a pic of the X99 during bench testing.

A reminder of the specs:
CPU: i7 5960X
RAM: 4 x 4 GB G.Skill RipJaws 4
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X99-SOC Force

The small CPU cooler was for testing only, it'll be replaced by the H105 in the finished rig.
Likewise, the GTX 560 Ti was for testing, too.

So... planning on doing some OCing on that chip???

Curious what those cores can get to stable, and wondering if it might be worth an upgrade. I frequently do some stuff that can use them all, but wondering if it would be at the cost of performance for things that don't.

By far (currently about 144:1 with what I'm crunching these days) the main amount of compute performance comes from my GPUs though, at least for things that are well optimized to use them. I keep my GPUs and CPU crunching set so it just does its thing in the background while I game, or what have you, without interruption, so the GPUs and CPU are only about 70% loaded in the background on average. Helps keep temps/fan noise/dust buildup down a little too.

Would have definitely gone with another Asus MB myself, probably their WS board again (http://www.asus.com/us/Commercial_Servers_Workstations/X99E_WS/), but... to each their own.

have you had chance to run any gpu benchmarks yet Kent? I expect your scores will go up considerably now your CPU is no longer bottlenecking it.
I guess you are still trying to get it working right at the moment though.

I haven't run any GPU benchmarks yet, still trying to work the bugs out of the system.

Perhaps over the next few days I can get a bit of time here and there to install and run the odd benchmark.

Might want to check out this video below then too. Not all that promising and seems like a trade off between architectures and overclockability, concidering I'm able to hit a safe and stable all core clock rate of 4.6GHz fully loaded 24/7 on my 3930K. Guess the only real advantage for me would be the extra 2 cores/4 threads on the 5960X, DDR4 RAM, and the ≈72 PCIe lanes (allocated up to, though I would use 64 in a 4×16 configuration) on the new ASUS WS board I'm looking at. But then again, these estimates might be on the conservative side.
