So my mom is looking to get my sibling a new computer because the one he has doesn't have what he needs for college. Mainly programs. She is under the assumption that she can go out, spend money on something and it will have what my sibling needs.(there is more to the story, but I don't want to get into too long a post here).

What my sibling really needs is the OS bought for so he can reload everything when he fills it up with too many viruses(as happens every couple months). He also needs some sort of OpenOffice/MicrosoftOffice program.................. That's it, this is all. I tried explaining this and failed. All she wants to do is buy a new computer that has all the programs already, but this just means more money that she really doesn't have. The main problem is that they want me to fix there computers when they run down, but I basically refuse to do it at this point as it's way too time consuming.

I don't think anyone can help me, I'm stuck watching them fail. But is there someone out there that has been able to get this point across too tough cases? Such a helpless feeling right now. They don't even learn either, they get the same problems over and over(they buy new crappy Pc's every year) like the computers are ruling part of there lives with no ability to prevent any hassle later on. I'm venting, sorry :(

Hi,
Depending on which collage they usually give a requirements list of programs,
Some even give needed program to students for the class schedule,
Best thing is to contact the collage and ask them,
Cheers.

If they keep getting infected, the problem is the user themselves. They need educated.

If nothing else, buy a pc and get the programs installed, then make them a standard user so they are better protected.

I'd think your life is too short for this, unless you like punishment. That's a possibility.

You say they no interest in listening or learning, so what do you hope to accomplish?

Find something else to do with your time. Avert your eyes. If they come crawling back, turn a deaf ear.

Why is this YOUR problem, rather than THEIR problem?

Accept the status quo and move on.

Ever had an alcoholic or dope fiend in your family?

Whatever you or they end up doing, as soon as all is working and all needed software is installed, do an image backup. That way when the inevitable virus or malware arrives, it will take you 20 minutes to restore the backup image then your done.

If this is a PC which came with Windows installed then you don't need to buy another copy of Windows to reinstall it . All you need is to do a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

The tutorial will show you how to get and maintain a perfect install, and never have to do another one.
