W7 is upsetting me

I've had XP x64 installed for almost a year now and i'm happy with it, but it's getting stressed out, it has some wear-out problems that are unfixable so I though I make a dual-boot with 64bit Windows 7 for newer OS. I have installed 32 bit version of W7 to my laptop before and it works fine there. But I've had lots of problems with 64 bit version on my desktop. Many, many annoyances such as pointless 'virtual' shortcuts everywhere in the system that only give access denied, impossible to get rights to access windows and programs settings folders, system modification etc. ,usage of drivers without digital signatures, problems with installing normal drivers, problems with MANY applications that even have 64 bit support, lower 3d application performance than XP has and the list goes on... some might be small ones and fixable.. but the point is.. THERE ARE SO MANY OF THEM!! This is pissing me off... I like the design and features of W7, but nothing works as it should!! Is it because its a RC version? Full release won't have these annoying issues?

Hoping to see some response
P.K.

I added my system specs, although I have no idea how system specs are related to operating system caused problems? Anyways I would really like to use W7 for directx10, more functions and to stay with time.

The first thing that I would do is upgrade as soon as possible to a later version than 7100. You have a pre beta that has many issues that were resolved in the RTM version...
Download and install the Windows 7 Enterprise version -=> Here

Its useless to begin addressing issues that may no longer be present in the final version..

Thank you for filling out your specs so completely and welcome to the Forums... :D

So I should to a complete reinstall? format that partition and install? If windows 7 is completely released will that newer version upgrade itself or I would have to reinstall it again?

Yes... by doing a format/re-install you are insuring that you have the cleanest installation possible.. you dont want to run the risk if leaving any unwanted garbage from your previous install..

Depending on what version you decide on, you may be able to do an in place upgrade, however, I wouldnt recommend it.. We are trying to troubleshoot possible problems, and IMO doing an upgrade will always complicate the issue... but lets leave that for later... first, lets get the RTM version downloaded and installed, then we will address any issues that you may have...

Hi there
I really liked XP 64 bit edition - probably the FASTEST MS OS ever -- certainly faster than XP 32 bit or even Win 2000 which wasn't bad.

I've finally gone back to it again on one of my machines for some multi-media work as it STILL has some way way better drivers than W7. It also can use the full amount of RAM I have on the machine. It's a pity it never made it out "to the masses".

However I use W7 for pretty well all my other other apps -- not sure what your specific problem is with W7.

Remember its a different OS so don't expect things to work exactly the same as they did in Windows XP 64 bit edition.

Incidentally there are still LOADS of XP 64 drivers out there but you have to hunt then down -- XP 64 bit edition is rapidly achieving "Cult Status" and there is a lot more stuff out there for this than you would imagine.

However don't give up with W7 -- dual boot if necessary.

Cheers
jimbo

got W7 build 7600 up an running.. everything works, although gaming performance ***** for example... resident evil 5 on XP X64 Max graphics DX9c framerate 40-60, on w7 max graphics dx10. 10-30.. is it normal? I have indeed overclocked my GPU but I did it on both.. Is it normal for W7 to have.. big performance drop? if so, then I'm a little disappointed :/. It is a W7 related thing then, since DX9 and DX10 are only rendering methods, and dx10 should even be faster. I have a big screen, and if I disable anti-aliasing, the graphics will become horrible.

Has your hardware manufacturer provided Windows 7 drivers? Is Windows 7 even supported by the manufacturer? It's not really fair to compare two operating systems if one of them isn't really supported by the manufacturer.

If that is what you think, then XP is what you should be using.. Windows 7 is good, but it is obviously not for everyone.. Use XP and be at peace...

W7 turns my .. still-a-legend 8800 into a mid-range, if I wish for everything to run perfectly smooth in W7, what should I upgrade? GPU I guess, but is ram and cpu ok?

I'd take Tews advice if it's that bad for you and leave Win7 alone...

It's hardware requirements are less than Vista's so if it feels slow to you maybe it's not your cup of tea...

That or your machine may have underlying isues.
Just my opinion.

you don't need to upgrade, you've got a beasty system as it is. As others have said, maybe windows 7 is not your cup of tea. But from your system specs, it should be running great.

could it be that the driver you are using for your gpu is not designed for windows 7? the problems you have described seem to resolve down to your gpu. Did you look for an updated driver on the manufacturers site?

I concur with antt.

Validate all of your drivers. Your machine should be responding better and you are well within the performance envlope of Win7.

Judging an Op system based on the performance of a single game is kinda silly. The vast majority of games, especially the newer ones run better on Win7 IMO. Remember that Win7 isn't even out to the public yet and the drivers have a ways to go.

I would clock that Q6600 up higher and get a better GPU if you want better performance.

I found about a 10% drop in frame rate going from XP to Vista using an 8800GTX, Then going from Vista to 7 the frame rate was the same (Though faster because after 3 years the drivers were better).

Since then I upgraded my video card and have a blistering frame rate in 7.

So if there is a frame rate drop it is surely due to the state of the drivers. Older cards may not get properly updated drivers to the new WDM for Vista/7 and so may really suck in performance... But cards in the last 3-4 years with updated WDM drivers should perform ATLEAST 90% as well if not better bey now.
