"Startup repair" failing - hard disk space issue?

And no, he made no attempts at maintenance. I don't think he knows how. He writes emails, plays games and buys movies and downloads them. He said he has close to 100 movies and even more games downloaded. No wonder he's out of hard drive space!

Get to a command prompt.

enter this:

cd..

That's cd followed by two dots.

Hit the enter key.

Do it again and again until the prompt appears as

C:\

and nothing more.

Advise when you are sitting at C:\ for a prompt, not some sub directory.

I've typed the command cd.. at least a hundred times. It's staying on X:\> --- what do you think?

Why X and not C?

Enter this command at the X prompt:

dir

followed by the enter key.

It looks like the computer is using ramdsisk type c: at the command prompt

"C:" worked!! Here is the screenshot of what appeared when I typed "dir" too.

cd User

make sure you type it in the exact way it said when you did the dir /p now do another

dir/p

and cd into the user name of your uncle

HI : Have you checked in the bios to make sure your windows drive is set to BOOT first ? I had a windows update some months ago that on re-boot , no boot ... The boot changed in the bios to a old drive ..

Okay, so it seems the user name is unknown the name I log in with (administrator), my uncles first and last name, isn't working no matter what I do.

I'm at command line, "C:\Users>"

Is there any way I can just go straight into Program Files to delete something to free up a little space so windows can run?

HI : Have you checked in the bios to make sure your windows drive is set to BOOT first ? I had a windows update some months ago that on re-boot , no boot ... The boot changed in the bios to a old drive ..

I haven't checked the BIOS. Is it easy to get to through the command screen?

Finally! I got it to work. My command prompt is now

What do I do now? I have no specific file names.

Okay, I'm using "dir" and "cd ______" to look at the Desktop, Photo folder, game folder, everything. How can I delete files via command? Is it possible?

Don't worry I doubt your boot order changed, do another

dir /p

and look for whatever name your uncle uses and then

cd whatever his name is

Then do

cd Videos

then another

dir /p

and look for some files to delete, your looking for movies that he downloaded for example

del some movie.mkv

or look for a movie folder and delete that eg

del folder name

When you first try to start the computer , keep pressing delete , repeatedly (you might need to press some other button , depends on the computer brand ). then you should be able to enter the bios screen ..

Im pretty sure the only reason that his computer said it was x: is because he was running the command prompt in ramdisk

If your uncle is willing to let you delete the movies he downloaded.

Just make sure you he still have the product key of his Windows.
