TrustedInstaller deleted

My problem is:
After having problems with TrustedInstaller I deleted it completely from my services-list. I didn't know that it is necessary to install Windows-Updates, so I can't update it now, but worse than that is that I can't activate my Windows Firewall or Windows Defender! It's very important for me to get help!!!

Hope you have some ideas to fix that :huh:

You might see if restoring the Windows Modules Installer (aka: TrustedInstaller) service using the tutorial below may be able to restore it for you.

If that doesn't help, then you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before you deleted the service to restore it.

Exactly how was it deleted from services? It might be disabled but how was it deleted?

It's some time ago, don't know how I exactly deleted it. I can just say that it isn't in my services-list anymore, but it is in Computer -> Boot (C -> Windows -> services. So it might be that I've just disabled it.
If I had to say how exactly, I think I went to a file, went to the owners and deleted it there. If that is even possible.

I looked up and found TrustedInstaller (see file). Maybe my problems are not TrustedInstallers fault:

-I can't activate Windows Firewall (0x80070424)
-I can't activate Windows Defender (0x80070424)
-I can't look for Windows Updates
If I try to install the Update I downloaded from the internet, again it's 0x80070424.

I hope you know or have ideas what the problem could be and how to solve it.

Well, the problem is not the files, but Windows Defender, Firewall and Updates. I can't remember that I've edited these.
I'm thinking about a reparation with the Windows 7 CD from my neighbour. Do you know if that could help and if yes, does that delete any of my files?

If you have a restore point available dated before this issue, you could do a system restore with it to undo and fix this.

It all depends on if your neighbor's installation DVD is the same edition as what your product key is for. If it is, then you could do a clean install with it. If not, then you won't be able to. Be sure to backup anything that you do not want to lose before doing a clean install though.

You may have damaged system files. After trying everything suggested, check for infection by downloading, installing declining trial versions, updating and running a full scan with Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloads - in Safe Mode with networking if necessary.

Once clear of infection, run SFC /SCANNOW Command, report back results.

If none of these help then you can consider a Repair Install.

However if your install varies much from the perfect install compiled in Clean Reinstall Windows 7 then I would strongly suggest you invest the time do do one, because it compiles everything that works best in Win7 based on tens of thousands of installs we've helped with here. So we know then you'll have the best install and keep it that way if you stick with the tools and methods provided there.

So you recommend me doing a Malware-Check, run sfc /scannow and after that a Repair Install with the Win7 CD from my neighbour? And yes, it's Win7 Service Pack 1 too, so it should work.
I will try that tomorrow if possible and post you my results.

Did you try System Restore and compare the Services settings Defaults in the tutorial Shawn linked?

You may get enough relief from those three scans, but if there are irreparable System files and problems persist, then I'd consider the Repair Install which keeps your programs, files and settings in place and reinstalls the OS. Make sure to read over Shawn's steps closely as you'll need to have a readable Product Key on the COA sticker and there will be a few settings you may need to set back.

If your neighbor's installation disk doesn't work, how to obtain media for your licensed version is discussed in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall Windows 7 including how to unlock other versions from the same disk to make your own.

Well, finally I repaired the Firewall it had nothing to do with TrustedInstaller, my PC had some Trojans. After removing them I repaired SharedAccess and BFE and now it works again.
I still have the problem "0x80070424" with my Windows-Defender and I still can't Update my Windows, but I think I will repair that soon too. (Windows-Update has no error-code, it just says that it cannot Update because the service isn't running and maybe a restart could help. (not original text, it's in German and I can't translate it exactly))

If you have some ideas how that could be fixed (Windows Updater&Defender) please reply.

What means 3rd party? I only have Avast! Free Antivirus as far as I know.

Shawn, do I have to backup my files on a external hard drive or can I just do that without saving and I will still have everything after that?

Yes, after they've found Trojans and I put them in quarantine, I ran the scans again on both and they didn't find any viruses. The results of sfc /scannow is: Nothing found. All should be fine but it still doesn't work.

Okay but the problem is 1rst I have no external hard drive and 2nd it's not really necessary is it?
I'd just be happy if the Defender and Updater work again, that's all I wanna have. Maybe I'll do the clean install later.

Bertie you have got a lot of good ideas given you but I would like to add a little information.

The Windows 7 built in Defender has been obsolete for a long time.
If you would like to keep with something from Microsoft that replaces Defender use MSE.

Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

When you install MSE it will turn off Defender and MSE will take it's place.
You will be safer with MSE.

You don't need to backup all your data when doing a Clean Install if you don't want to save your data.
If you want to save some data when doing a Clean Install you will have to get some storage device for that data.
The understanding we want you to have is once you do a Clean Install all data on that partition will be lost if it is not backuped.

I'd strongly recommend as has Shawn that you Clean Reinstall Windows 7 since you'll never know for sure it's completely clean or undamaged after heavy infection even if the scans come up clean.

If you would prefer to try to repair, and SFC /SCANNOW Command does not show unfixable System Files after 3 tries, and you don't want to run a Repair Install which often fixes problems like this, then try these to see if you can get Updates functioning:

Keep in mind that Windows Update may require plenty of Restarts and even Shutdowns if there are Updates queued with a "!" on the Start Menu Shutdown button. This is how to clear them if they bunch up or start erroring.
