application has stopped working error

Hi...

I am working on 3ds max application, which always takes lot of time to load files or do some any complex work, the problem is windows 7 thinks it as "application has stopped working":devil: and closes that down, i am sure, if i can give more time to 3ds max application it will surely come back from not responding state to responding state, but this stupid windows 7 is creating problem for me............

can any one help me on this.........

I think you've misjudged the symptoms.

The OS will not terminate a process just because it's unresponsive to "window messages" for whatever reason. When that's the extent of the problem, you tend to see the app UI lock up, accompanied by a "not responding" label in Task Manager.

"Application has stopped working" is the nice way of saying "has crashed". The OS notices when the app unintentionally does things which are impossible - division by zero, accessing memory which doesn't belong to it... that sort of thing. If the app cannot recover when such an attempt is caught (it doesn't provide a suitable "exception handler"), then the inevitable result is an outright crash.

Try updating 3DSMax, your video driver, and stay away from "desktop enhancers/extenders" and similar utilities which could conceivably mess with the app UI rendering.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (update till date)
Abit IP35-E board,
8GB RAM,
3 HDD's connected to it (nearly 1.5 TB space)
Radeon HD4850 graphics card
I have installed only 3ds max 9 64bit....... thats it as of now.


I also found this and made these changes.....

i rebooted the system, then i stuck in some other problem...... 3 times login freezed.
then somehow login went on....

and now the application i mean 3ds max is working without any problem...........
its not closing.....

hope you people will suggest me some good solution

Sorry if my words were kind of hurting to anyone. I am not expert. But i am sure, because i know how 3ds max works in Windows XP 64bit.
In Windows 7, they may have added some feature where if an application becomes not responding, then an window popsup..... saying Application has stopped working and then it tries to find solution or it will ask us to close it down, when we try to close that window by pressing cancel, it will close that non responding application as well.

Please tell me if we have any option where we can control this "application has stopped working dialog box"

In that way i hope we can solve this issue....

I am not a "guru of" anything, except pulse MIG welding of marine-grade 5000 series magnesium aluminium alloys, which is not a useful skill in this instance, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be open to input from others after you ask for assistance in resolving a problem.

The "application has stopped working" message is precipitated by the fact that the application has just crashed. Hence, your aim is not to "control" the message, but rather to understand, fix, or bypass the reasons for the crash on your Win7 machine. To that end, I'd like to ask you for more info first:

1. If I understand correctly, this symptom happens when you exit/close the application?
2. Does it only happen when you're closing the application?
3. Does it still happen even if you don't open/work on any files during that application session? In other words, start the app, then close it straight away without opening files.
4. Does the same crash occur when you log on as a different user? You may need to create a new user account purely for the purpose of this test.
5. Does it make a difference if you run the app in "compatibility" mode for XPSP3 or Vista? To do that, right-click the application shortcut, properties, "Compatibility" tab, tick the box and select XP/Vista, then restart the app and test the effects.
6. Is your version of the app certified for use on Win7 (and Vista) by the app developer? You may need to do some research on their website.

Armed with the answers to those questions, I may be able to suggest more focused troubleshooting steps. Please come back and let us know the results.

Here are the answers for your question .............

1. No it does not happen when i close the application, it happens when i open huge file (with lots of mesh), even if i am not doing anything with that. And as for as i know, in XP 64bit, when we open huge files, it just goes into not responding mode, then it comes back without any problem.... after it gets loaded it will respond correct. It just simple that when ever we open/close the huge file it just goes to non responding mode, after a while it comes back to normal mode.
2. Some times happens, as i told you above, when open or try to close huge file.
3. If we just opening and doing some simple things, its just rock solid stable, we can do what ever we want, it will be in respoding mode.
4. Yes it is happening in another user account as well, and my account is having domain administrator rights....... as i am the domain admin here.
5. As from morning i dint faced any problem with the application, i have not yet tested this compatibility thing. I will if i face any problem like before.
6. My application is compatible with Vista x64, and those are compatible with vista will be compatible with windows 7, as drivers are compatible (this is what i think)

Hope now you can suggest me better........:huh:. if i have said anything wrong above please correct me.

Before doing anything else, I would try reinstalling the application in case any registry or file components have become corrupted along the way. In three years time a lot can happen to an application even though you have kept it updated.

Actually, it was while I was reading your post that I thought "whoops, shoulda mentioned that." Not particularly thorough that time

There was no disagreement. Only compliments all 'round.

We are waiting for you to test the outstanding action items when you get a chance:

a) Compatibility mode for the app (both XPSP3 and Vista).

b) Uninstall the anti-virus (deactivating it is not a valid test) and test again.

c) Reinstall the application in case it's settings have somehow gotten corrupted.

The troubleshooting after that is going to get more complex, so it would be good to rule out the simpler solutions first.

Uninstall the application before reinstalling. A repair install may not do the job. Start from scratch with the most current version of the application. Simply updating the application to the most current version may carry any corruption forward.

I am assuming the application is compatible with Win 7. Most apps compatible with Vista are also compatible with Win 7.

Between i had problem with server itself........ took 2 hours to trouble shoot it. That was clearly a antivirus firewall protection issue. Which was denying access to workstations

Now i will see, if it creates problem once again, i will think of doing your solutions.
