Thanks Thrashzone. been looking at these but didn't think a cheap one would work. now I can go out and buy one. I will , only use it once that's why I was reluctant to spend a lot of money.

If you aren't afraid to tinker with your new computer, you don't need an enclosure. Just plug your old hard drive into the HDD
controller and a power source.

Hi,
The one I posted will accommodate both size hdds
So if you remove the hdd first you can take it to the stare with you and get one for it's size.

There are a bunch of them out there and are great to have handy one with a fan is also a good idea and also usb 3.0 with esata capabilities

Look at the usb port on the machine are any of them blue in color ?
The blue color is usb 3.0 ports.

To access the external you will need to take ownership of the entire external drive
This makes it easy,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1911-take-ownership-shortcut.html
After you Take ownership of it,
Then scan it with your security to make sure it's clean Before transferring any files over to the new machine ! ;)
You might even scan it with mbam free to make sure no malware exists,

Cheers.

For various reasons an enclosure with a sata HDD in it can be a more reliable external backup HDD than say a WD ext HDD. Definitely go for a USB 3 enclosure.
An alternative is a docking station. Again you can use these with a basic sata drive as a backup device.

Morning and thanks to all of you. Thrashzone /Victor s /MJF. I solved it (rather drastically).
I bought a new computer ,(the motherboard had gone in the old one). so he installed my old hard-drive.
in the new one one ,it works a treat. But I am going to buy a external hard drive carrier, for future use.
you never know.

once again I would like to thank all of you for your help. :D
