How do I change CD-ROM speed? (Transfer speed is extremely slow)

Hello guys!

So I bought this kick-ass laptop from MSI. It is pretty good. These are the specs (in case they aid in finding a solution to my problem):

Name: MSI WorkStation Series GT60 2OKWS-674US

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

CPU: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7-4800MQ

Hard drive: 1 TB 7200 RPM, 128 GB Solid-State Drive

Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro K3100 with 4 GB DDR3 VRAM

Hard disk description: SATA

Optical Storage Device: BD Burner

Cache Memory installed size: 6.0

Problem statement:

I am trying to copy files from a DVD disc (some 3 GB of data) using the CD-ROM on this laptop. The transfer speed is EXTREMELY LOW! It starts with almost 3.5 MB/sec at first, but then after 10 seconds or so, it gets down to 500 KB/sec! The transfer was going to take approximately 6 hours, which is a lot for a laptop with specs like mine.

I tried to copy the same DVD to another laptop, which had much lower specs than my MSI, the approximated time was 10 minutes.

I tried to update CD-ROM but it told me that it was up to date.

Please help me guys!

Best regards,

The Specs don't mean nothing buddy, however the specs of the DVD Driver do... :)

I've been fighting with this exact same problem with Windows 7 for over two years, on FOUR different computers - 3 with Win 7 and one with Vista - and we're not alone. This BS started with Vista and Windows 7 Betas. It's a known Windows kernel bug that didn't exist in XP and isn't going to be fixed.

How do I get around this? I put all my thousands of small files into 4GB VeraCrypt containers and burn them to DVD+RW. Transferring large files from DVD to Desktop goes fast enough. Then I launch VeraCrypt and open the file, and dig out the one I want. Large Zip files work well, too.

Do guys think that if I buy an external CD-DRIVE, it will solve the problem?

Solve it by leaving 1995 and entering 2015. DVD storage is obsolete. Buy some (USB) flash drives/sticks and backup to those.

I think that if you look in the tutorials for one called something like "add copy to / move to " the right click context menu and use that instead of the idiotic windows paste thing it will do what you expect. I just tried with a 4gig dvd and windows way would take a looooonnnng time. Brink's way took about 4 1/2 minutes.

Nope. USB drives are no faster on the two Win7 and one Vista rigs in my house than DVD+RW.
DVD storage is not obsolete. Discs and burners are still widely available for sale.
