Hi all

Whilst I love W7 and X-64 RTM has exceeded my expectations in stability and performance I'm REALLY disappointed with IE8 -- This DEFINITELY needs some major fixes and SOON.

1) Randomly get IE8 has unexpectedly stopped working -- you get a little popup to ask you if you want to return to your home page or restore your last session

2) Using Vmware server -- IE8 gets its knickers in a twist quite a lot -- the virtual machines are still acessible but you get message 1) as above.

(I think vmware made a bo-bo by deciding on using a Web interface for controlling Virtual Machines with vmware server - not a good idea but that's another issue).

3) security settings getting "lost" or changed randomly when switching from "public Internet" to loacal Intranet.

Other odd quirks when acessing some web sites with certificates -- Browser just seems to hang with some cryptic message in the status bar saying DONE (with a blank screen) or Javascript void(); or other equally cryptic error.

I'm not sure why the EU were ranting against IE -- I'd chuck IE8 in an instant if I could.

I can't for all sorts of reasons so PLEASE don't post use Firefox etc etc. I'm stuck with IE8.

C'mon MS -- IMO you've let done a great OS by a HORRIBLE unfinished implementation of IE8.

Cheers
jimbo

I was a frequent user of IE8 prior to switching to Firefox, I still use IE8 but less often now.

I have never had any real problems with IE8 on Windows 7 aside from it asking me randomly to do the setup it does, when you first run it.

While I admit they could have done better with IE8, I still say its overall pretty good in comparison to IE7.

Well, that sucks. I never use VMware, only Virtualbox, and I rarely even use that.

IE was much worse in the earlier builds, losing cookies and frequent crashes.

It has improved greatly since then but I do see some room for improvment.

The stopped working messages with the page not loading does happen fairly often but I'm sure there is a reason for it and that it's fixable.

Havn't tried running any virtual machines with it but I'm sure your assessment is correct.

I have a simple and easy solution: use firefox. you can go get an IE 8 skin to make it look similar to IE 8 and get glasser to make the URL bar thing transparent.

That is a good solution for some, however its not a solution for others. A lot like to keep the native browser of Windows because, well its the native browser.

There is a long list of problem associated with using firefox also. It's not a perfect solution in many cases. Besides that, I get tired of people saying change to FF to fix IE problems.

I like IE8 and have none of the problems mentioned have. It is extremely stable, it has not lost settings and when there has been the occasional crash (I'm talking 2 maybe 3 IE crashes per month) Crash Recovery has successfully brought it all back. :)

I get tired of people saying change to FF to fix IE problems.
I do too. In fact, I've been tired of it from the start - that is, since IE6. It's just a cop-out, most often bred out of misplaced distain for Microsoft, and FF fans. IE8 works. If yours does not, you got a problem and changing to FF is simply a cover-up.

To say it is not ready for prime time is really an injustice. Not only is it more than ready, it's already here, complies with Web Standards and not MS standards, and is running perfectly fine on 100s of millions of Windows computers with no problems right now.

FF is NOT a fix for anything - it is just an alternative browser.

I get tab crashes a lot. On some sites I know I can count on it.... like Tomshardware.com, many others. Seems like the back button causes more tab crashes than anything; for me at least.
I like IE8 but the crashes get annoying. Maybe today's big fix will help.

Hi there
I DID say in my post that for Work reasons I HAD to use IE8 -=- of course I would use FF if possible.

I appreciate help of course in solving problems but please READ the whole post before coming up with a solution most reasonably experienced people would already have tried if it were applicable.

Hi there

FF in the past has often worked where IE has had problems such as in the Earlier versions of the BBC Iplayer. FF has also seemed better at managing plugins.

It's usually good to have more than one browser installed anyway as sometimes obtuse web sites won't work with one browser but will with another.

On my Linux systems I always use FF and Konqueror (KDE based - works a treat now KDE 4.2 is stable) but on a corporate Laptop it's not often possible to install "User Software" legally.

(Of course booting from a Linux disk always lets me access a Windows registry as it's just another DATA file) but if I'm messing around with the registry I'll do it on my own computers :D.

Incidentally I've added the latest fixes - but it doesn't seem to have stopped the IE8 problems. even on W7 installed as the HOST system.)

I've installed also W7 x86 ultimate, W7 x-64 Professional and W-64 enterprise as 3 Virtual machines also for testing.

IE8 seems the most stable on the X-86 machine (but I'm not reverting back to a 32 bit OS at this stage of the game). I was just testing this stuff.

Cheers

New project(2013)...Another low power server. Zotac H67ITX, i3-2100T, Windows Server 2012 Essentials on Samsung SSD.
Previous project...Low power (38-40 watts using Kill-a-Watt) Windows Home Server. Zotac ION (Atom 330, GeForce9400), 4GB RAM, 2x2TB WD Green, IN WIM miniITX Case. Fits on a shelf in laundry closet, practically silent.
I use Internet Explorer 8 mostly (for the integration and look) and Chrome (for the speed and smooth scrolling)

I can say that looking at reliability monitor most of my crashes are from Internet Explorer, but I believe this is because of sites with bad code (scripts) and not IE itself.

The reason I use IE is because it matches the Windows theme well, and I'm used to all the functions (most people use it at work). That said I would move to Chrome 100% if the interface didn't look like pure crap (in my opinion)
