My computer runs Win7 x64, so naturally I decided to install Office 2010 64 bit. While I have had no problems with the program itself thus far, MS released it too early as there are very few programs which play nice with it. This is particularly true for Outlook, which really does need to interact with other programs. Specific problems include:

  • MS MapPoint (yes!) - The Map It feature cannot be hooked to MapPoint
  • Cardscan - you cannot transfer data with the 64 bit version
  • QuickBooks - built-in emailing functionality does not work
  • Linked In social connector
  • HTC Sync (program for syncing HTC Android phones) - need a goofy work-around
  • Peak (allows one to see email content without opening - great plug-in!)
  • Outlook attachment sniffer
So, basically everything I want to do with Outlook, beyond simply reading mail, cannot be done.

So, it is time to remove the 64 bit version (not sure what benefits, if any, I'll be losing) and install the 32 bit version. My question is this: Will a simple uninstall followed by a reinstall work, or is there likely to be left-over files and/or registry keys which will cause problems?

Thanks

p.s. I assume that it would not be advisable to simply unistall/reinstall just Outlook?

64 Bit

The issue is not Office 64 per se, its a great office suite!
The issue is that 64 bit programs have not come along yet to be compatable.
Case in point, ie8 is in 64 bit, however there are some plugins that are still 32 bit that won't run on a 64 bit browser.

Yes, but who uses IE? :-)

Are you aware of any problems with regard to uninstalling the 64 bit version and reinstalling the 32 bit version?

Microsoft strongly recommends, even with 64-bit operating system that people standardize on the 32-bit version of Microsoft Office 2010 for the time being. When you download from the volume license site, MSDN or Technet...you get a warning suggesting that you use the 32-bit version.

64bit office 2010 was almost a proof-of-concept. It is recommended only for instances where you are working with huge datasets.

Good news - no problems uninstalling the 64 bit and reinstalling the 32 bit.
