I'm trying to follow the posting guidelines before I post my Windows update problem but don't know which SURT file to download, could someone please help?

My computer properties are :

Windows 7 Home Premium
Copyright 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
64-bit Operating System

(I have not been able to succesfully download/install Service Pack 1, which is the problem I will eventually ask about, and every option I see for SURT has an SP, which I don't have at all.)

ETA - Sorry guys, just saw I wasn't reading things properly.

YIKES!! Are you on dial-up? If the SURT is gonna take 52 hrs the SP1 may take 104 (it's almost twice as large as SURT)...

BTW, you're welcome, & welcome to Sevenforums. Lot's of good, friendly, helpful & professional folks hang out here... I'm sure you'll get things straight here!

yes Yikes indeed Urthbound! :) I've started the download and it's gonna take 128 hours, give or take. I'm on satellite, I'm in rural Australia.

I'll outline my overall problem and see what you think. I stupidly turned the power off when my desktop was shutting down the other day. It wouldn't boot up after that and I tried lots of recovery stuff but ended up doing the factory reset. Now I'm back to Windows 7 without a Service Pack and Internet Explorer version 8. I tried to update IE but it says it needs Windows to have the Service Pack. Windows did automatic updates and shows as having downloaded the SP in one window but it seems not to have installed it.

Seeing as I haven't done that much since the factory reset, except personalise some backgrounds and such, would I be better of doing another factory reset and seeing if Windows updates itself properly this time? Or should I throw the computer out the window, like I sort of feel like doing at the mo :)

ETA - I do have a laptop that is behaving itself fairly well, and is more up to date with its, well, updates.

thought I should expand on my Windows Update SP status as mentioned above.

Update History shows Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932) was successfully installed 1 June 2015.

Installed Updates shows a number of installs for 1 June 2015 but the SP is not listed.

The Windows Update window says Most Recent Check for Updates - Never, and Updates were installed - Never (though when it did download some updates on the 1st June there were def some dates against those lines. Then they disappeared.)

I've tried "checking for updates" heaps of times but it comes back with error messages, usually blaming lost internet connection.

Let's try and begin at the beginning: To see if SP1 is installed Click the Start button , right-click Computer, and then select Properties. If Service Pack 1 is listed under Windows edition as shown below, SP1 is already installed on your computer.

You definitely need to run the SURT tool & follow the instructions in the Windows Update Posting Instructions (as you first intended) and start a new topic with the logs/info requested per the forum protocol. Running SURT & sfc /scannow would've been my next suggestions anyway, you might as well start a new thread as the topic here "which surt should I download" has been asked & answered. You can always reference this thread when you start your new topic.

It's 1:30 AM here and I'm about ready to call it a night, good luck!
