What don't you like about Windows 7?

Status

I really like it. I've only had a few issues:

I miss being able to have a taskbar full of links that I could pin anywhere. It was a great alternative to a dock.

I can't stand the search function. There are no freaking options, I feel powerless while searching. XPs was demonically slow but at least I knew exactly what I was doing. Maybe I just don't know how to use the search yet, anyone have any tips?

Accessing files on my XP instalation is such a freaking pain. Why isn't there a "I'm the damned Admit so give me full permissions over everything that exists on this stupid harddrive because I OWN It!" button?

I hate feeling like the OS is trying to protect me from myself. Windows 7 has improved that aspect a lot from Vista but I still have some issues. (Then again none are as bad as OSX).

P.S.

Who on earth would want the old start menu? The start menu is the one thing, I think, Windows has ALWAYS vastly improved upon in every version. XP's was 10x better than 98's, Vistas was a lot better than XP's and 7's didn't change a whole lot but it rocks.

Being able to type the name of the program to search for it is so incredibly necessary; I wouldn't want a start menu without it.

EDIT: Just found a new one. When you're setting permissions for a folder with thousands of files and you accidentally hit cancel halfway through, windows is happy to tell you how bad this is and how some of the files won't be accessible. They do not, however, provide an "Are you sure?" box. -_-

Maybe I just don't know how to use the search yet, anyone have any tips?

If you want to search hidden files and folders you need to tick "show hidden files and folders" under My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View

Windows XP has that option right on the search form, which is more convenient. Although I always disable hidden files anyways, so it's no big deal. But it does become a bit of a hassle when you maintain multiple user accounts.

It is because of the permission on the files. Everything is governed by ACLs, just because you are the part of the admin group doesn't mean Windows should disregard ACLs.

As for search, maybe: Advanced search techniques - Windows Vista Team Blog - The Windows Blog, or Windows Search Advanced Query Syntax

Yeah there's not one button for that but it can be done with a few mouse clicks (although I admit one would need to be an advanced user to even comprehend it).

My system specs and gripes...

And WIN7 will not even see my RAID and setup why....

And just to cap my Gripes WHERE IS THE "CLASSIC" and usual START as it was in VISTA. not to mention the changed interface???

WIN 7 is a no go for me and my users all have the same problem.

And judging from you comments you will just keep paying MS ...
I am a shareholder. MS pays me.

There's one thing I can't quite follow.

If you like classic, which you are of course entitled to,
why try a brand new OS?

It's like buying a new car and saying, hey what have you guys done with the radio?
You know, the one with the two buttons?

Hehe, good point, Moral of the story: We shouldn't complain over simple changes that don't really interfere with the running of the OS(the car will run just fine, even if the radio is missing a button or two)...:D

The question that has to be addressed here is why did Microsoft remove the Classic options

The answer is that their market research indicated to them that the actual number of systems running the option was of such a level that the additional resources that are required to facilitate this option are below the level that makes this a viable option.

Due to the vast numbers of Windows users the actual number of users may be a relatively large number, and if you are one of these users then the issue may be enough to prevent you from moving to Windows 7.

This is a user's right and is neither right or wrong. What I do see in the real world is that a system administrators personal preferences become the policy for the system they administer - without any real research into the user preferences.

This, I believe, is wrong as the role of the Administrator, when evaluating software, should not be based on personal preferences but on the needs of the business and it's users.

I hope my last post doesn't fall under "attack" or "flame".
I did write he is entitled to his opinion.
And the car-radio thing was a joke, and I wrote j/k at the bottom and placed smiley's.

The terms "attacks" and "flames" might be a bit too strong.

I haven't seen that much attacks and flames from pro W7 users,
as I have seen from people against W7.

The thing that puzzles me is that the "what don't you like...?" is now at 66 pages.
The "what do you like...?" stopped at 4.

One would almost think the majority doesn't like Windows 7. :p

To not add to this misconception, I will unsubscribe from this thread.

The reason the post is so long is because, as culture dictates, it is usually far more fashionable to bitch and moan than it is to jump for joy... I think there will always be those who hate anything Microsoft puts out there. Having worked in IT for years, along side numerous Linux die hards, Mac lovers, and Microsoft fans, there is a running joke that anything that Microsoft puts out there is going to be a turd in a pretty plastic wrapper. Some of this sentiment Microsoft earned, some sprouts from the rebel urge in all of us, some is just popular banter from folks trying to sound smarter than they are...

Regarding all the posts about 7 being a resource hog, or the post I saw that stated 7 uses more resources than Vista.. I beg to differ. I personally installed 7 on an older laptop running with 768 mb of ram, and am having a better experience on the machine than I was with XP.. Same is true for my brother in laws laptop, which we over-hauled with 7 some weeks back. He loves it!! We had over-hauled it with XP probably 3 times in the last 2 years, and it never ran as good as it does now..

Yes, the requirements are higher than they were with xp or 2000. Same is true for Mac, or any other system out there. I cannot load the latest OSx on my G3 mac computer, but I am quite ok with it.. Windows (I mean the whole family spectrum here 2000-win7) does something no other OS can do, it runs on just about anything... meaning, I can slap together parts in my garage that I have laying around, plug it into a monitor and keyboard, and chances are, I can load a version of windows on it, to make a working computer.. This is not true for any other platform... 7 Definitely uses less resources than Vista. Beyond all of the information that has been published on this subject, just watching my system monitors, ram, cpu etc.. makes this absolutely plain..

Also, I personally cannot stand the classic start menu. Always frustrating when I come across a server out there that is configured with it.. To each his own I guess, but I would encourage you to try the search function of the modern start menu religiously over the course of a week.. If you are like me, you will wonder how you ever got by without it..

I personally am one of those who strongly believes it did get better, in so many ways.. I keep finding new things to like, nothing really to dislike. I never shut my machine down, and when I sit down, regardless of the fact that I have about 12 programs open at any given time, my machine is snappy, responsive, and pretty to look upon..

Certainly there are things wrong that need improving.
-I wish copy/paste of large, or large groups of files was smoother...
-I wish explorer would get a dual view button added to it, so you can view the contents of folder side by side in a single window.... hey, there is a nifty idea for aero, drag one window on top of another, perform a little mouse magic, and watch as the two windows bloom into one dual window, sort of like a bubble does when it meets another bubble.. damn I ramble..
-I wish explorer had left a little extra space to right click inside a folder when you want to paste contents there..
-I think virtual drives should come built in.
-Though I love the fact that explorer will now let you edit mp3 tags, would be cool if we had a way to edit for multiple files at the same time... or even the ability to rename multiple files at the same time using customize-able conventions..

Still, 7 is my favorite OS to date, and I have used just about everything else I think. And it has not even hit retail.. I have used it exclusively for 3 months, and had a very hard time complaining..

1 Machine that does it all, and does it all pretty dang well, all things considered.

i just love windows 7 to death! haven't had any problems with it thus far.

except that explorer didn't save my preview pane size, but i fixed that now.

and since i'm on a 64 system, i'm having mad issues finding a suitable mkv video player, as wmp11 is still not quite capable in that field.
