Nor am I hijacking the thread. Merely pointing out MS has a history of taking another successful business model in the tech field and applying it to their business. Where is Google's primary source of revenue? Advertising.

And you are pointing to something that is not present, but you are afraid that it may be there.
I would suggest you to have a tinfoil hat. :)

xips may not be far off. Look how Microsoft is advertising windows 10. They install 3035583 and other updates to get people to upgrade 10. I see it as this, I bought a windows 7 computer, that doesn't mean I want a windows 10 computer. I read one of the tech articles saying Windows 10 or later could go ad based. I don't have the link because I read so many articles on 10.

I also read some of those windows 10 updates may be causing problems with windows 7. In fact, I told a poster here to remove those windows 10 updates and change the windows update settings.

Agree.

Am not against 10 (have tested most of the bulids so far and got it running on 1 laptop, waiting to see what the rtm will look like), but am reluctant to support the way MS is pushing 10 by using windows update for (imo) spamming + installing unwanted programs\features\files. But hey, they must be desperate after the w8\metro\mobile acceptance & market share debacle, so I guess they'll try anything.

I am wondering how good is W10? Will it support all games that need W7 too? Is it worth the upgrade? I am so confused.

Thanks in advance.

You see this as advertising? Microsoft are offering something for free. Don't want it, unintsall the update and you'll never see it again.

I see it as this, I bought a windows 7 computer, that doesn't mean I want a windows 10 computer.

Too much aggravation here, stop arguing guys please! Opinions are being expressed as facts, facts are (possibly) being misquoted.

I just need to know two things:
* I have a full retail copy of 7/64. If I get to the point of hating 10 after installation, can I wipe the drive and reinstall 7?
* I love 7. It does what I need and has done that for much longer than any other Windows product, all the way back to 3.1.
So - how long can I use it for in safety?

This is really funny but becoming absurd!

Again, let's try to summarize: You geeks are complaining because Microsoft is giving their next OS for free and allowing you to decide, either to prepare for the free upgrade, or deny it. "That bad Microsoft, I don't want to get the latest Windows for free!"

Knowing some of you whiners quite good I am absolutely sure that if Microsoft had not made it possible for all Windows 7 and 8.1 users to get the free upgrade as soon as possible, you were now whining about "Why does Microsoft not contact us and give an opportunity to prepare for the upgrade already now?"

You can't whine about the price anymore because it's free, you cannot complain about "being forced to cloud" as it's totally possible to use Windows 10 with a local account, you cannot complain about "I don't want a mobile touch OS" because Windows 10 is a full-fledged desktop OS working totally OK with mouse and keyboard, so of course I understand you a bit, you have to invite new reasons for your whining. Weapons are taken away from you one by one, it is starting to be difficult to find new stuff to whine about.

Funny but absurd.

Kari

* I have a full retail copy of 7/64. If I get to the point of hating 10 after installation, can I wipe the drive and reinstall 7?

The details of that are unclear.

You may be able to go back to 7 by restoring a previously made image, such as with Macrium.

If you wipe the drive and reinstall 7, you would need a Product Key at some point. It's not entirely clear if your original retail Win 7 Product Key would be valid as it was during your original installation of Win 7 retail. You may have to have it re-authorized in some sense. You may need to "retrieve" it in some way from the Microsoft/Windows "store". You may need a Microsoft account to do that.

Just wait for more details from the early adopters/canaries in the coal mine. You don't have to do anything at all till July 2016 if you want the "free upgrade".

If worse comes to worse and you want Win 10, you can always buy it outright in DVD form and say to hell with the free upgrade, in which case you could reinstall Win 7 retail at will just as you can now.

Even though I have pretty much decided to stay with 7, doesn't mean I won't give 10 a shot if somethings change by the time it is released.

You dont know anything, Kari!

Microsoft said it will be a free upgrade, it will not be cloud based, it will be desktop compatible, but that does not mean those will actually happen. Learn form me, I can successfully imagine the future what nobody told but actually will happen.

  1. When you will upgrade to 10, when your computer will boot up for the first time, you will notice that it is not booting up to the desktop but showing advertisements only. And from then, it will show advertisements everywhere. You will open Start > All programs > MS Office > Word, and it will open the advertisement of AXE body spray.
  2. You are dancing for having a free upgrade, but you will come to know how much free it is when you will see your next bank statement. You will see that M$ has deducted $10 from your account, and this will continue till the effective lifetime of the device. You will not be able to stop it, anyhow.
  3. Everything will be cloud only, your OS, programs, data, all will go to cloud.
  4. Being happy that all cloud will rule out the need for a HDD? You fool. Everytime your HDD damages, you have to pay $199 to M$ for a new license. Not only HDD, the same will happen even if you change the mouse, or get a new pen drive.
  5. Microsoft said it will release on 29th July, but their left hand dont know the right hand. Only I know. Actually it will come on 31st June. Dont ask me which hand I am, you should know that I am the upperhand.
  6. You will never be able to install any other OS in any of your home systems. Even if you buy a blank freeDOS laptop, M$ will acquire it whenever it will enter in your WiFi zone. Now pay $199 to them.
  7. It will increase obesity, blood pressure, blood sugar, suicidal rate, etc. If any person having body dandruff use it, it will peel their skin up.
And many more.

If you still neglect me and upgrade, see you on 1st August, crying here to get your windows 7 back.

Do you deny that Win 10 has dropped WMC and Gadgets? Either one of those is enough for me to stay with Win 7 until near the end. What about the forced updates and upgrades in Win 10 Home? Even in Pro, one can only delay them for a while? Even MS said they were going to use home consumers to test updates and upgrades before releasing them to businesses (it wasn't clear if Pro users were included in that category or only Enterprise users).

When Vista came out, I didn't upgrade from XP only because I would have had to replace my scanner and laser printer, both of which were still working quite well, because drivers weren't available and upgrade my music software to the $600 version (the upgrade itself would have cost over $400) because it wasn't compatible with Vista. Even when Win 7 came out, I delayed upgrading because of the hardware and software compatibility issues plus my computer was incompatible with Aero.

It wasn't until I replaced my last XP netbook with my first notebook that I finally got Win 7. I was expecting a huge learning curve even though I had no qualms about upgrading. There was a learning curve but I was able to hit the ground running. the notebook was primarily for travel so the printer and scanner weren't an issue. Once I replaced the printer due to difficulty getting toner that wasn't expired (one reason I now won't buy HP products; they abandon products too quickly) and replaced the scanner because the POS didn't last very long (the second of the two Epson products that were garbage; the reasons I won't buy Epson anymore), I replaced my XP machine with the one I'm using now and put Win 7 on it. I delayed choosing between Win 7 and Win 8 for that machine until Win 8 had come out and I had a chance to try it. Unlike Win 7, which I liked immediately, I did not like Win 8 at all so I went with Win 7.

When Win 10 first came out, it really looked promising but then MS started making changes that were less promising. The final straws for me were dropping WMC and Gadgets. I've yet to hear of a program for recording OTA TV shows that is good as WMC and doesn't require a subscription fee to use. SiliconDust, the company that makes my tuners, is working on a replacement that will have an affordable subscription fee but it will remain to be seen if they follow through and if it will be any good.

My UPS depends on a gadget (I use two instances of it) to monitor the incoming voltage, power consumption, and runtime remaining. Since it would cost me well north of $1000 to replace it and, even though it is over two years old, the batteries are still in like new condition (which I will admit is amazing) and can be easily replaced with ones available locally so I'm not about to replace the UPS if I can help it. Updates to the software are not available since the UPS has been discontinued since I bought (new with full warranty for well under MSRP) it; in fact, it still under extended warranty.

Yes and no. MS quit supporting their own gadgets and encouraged users to quit using all gadgets because some were security issues (I'm not sure if any MS gadgets were among those with security issues). However, MS hasn't disabled the ability to use third party gadgets until Win 10. I'm using two gadgets (clipboard extender and drive monitor) from a gadget pack that was designed for Win 8.x but have some gadgets that will work with Win 7. My desktop calendar is also a gadget. I haven't had any problems with any of them (although the two from the Win 8.x gadget pack are resource hogs; fortunately, I have more than enough resources to spare).

They were never really deactivated nor have any viruses that I've seen ever been directly attributable to them. The weather and stock gadgets stopped working however there is an MSN weather gadget which is identical except that it offers five days expandable forecast.

Gadgets remain popular with millions in Windows 7 and those who lose functionality due to IE 11 security can install the 8GadgetPack which works fine in Windows 7 and remains stable.

My concern for windows 10 which I have been using since October is there are still enough bugs that I'm not sure it's going to be ready by end July. Just this week I've had to go back to Yahoo Web mail because it's mail is no longer fully downloadable in the Mail app except in the individual email. This appears to be due to the loss of the setting to download "As Mail arrives" which is replaced by "Based on My Usage" perhaps to avoid too large a file for mobile devices. At first that setting tells me that it will download mail as it arrives however quickly changes to every two hours and never fully downloads each email which means it is not based on my usage or it would see that I have plenty of DriveSpace to download fully all of my Yahoo mail.

I've had several other issues that are only partially remedied by a clean reinstall of 10130.

I've wondered about that myself but didn't worry about it since, if I was going to get Win 10 (I refuse to call it an upgrade when I loose features), I would have waited several months for any early bugs to get worked out.
