Phooey! I had trouble with my Office 2007 and finally gave up on it, switching to LibreOffice. As might have been predicted, I'm quite frustrated with that on (although, give it credit, it *does* work!).

So I pulled out my Office 2000 CDs. I've had that on a Windows 7 machine before and am pretty sure it ought to be installable. But when I try, it fiddles and diddles for awhile and the starts with the error messages. After each, I clicked ignore (just to see what would happen) which took me to the next and finally culminated in a can't install-fatal error message.

There were four 1401 errors thusly: cannot create key ... be sure you have access ...

And then two 1406 errors: could not write value FileName to key ...

Then one 1402 error: could not open key ...

And finally, the fatal error: installation ended prematurely because of an error.

I have no idea where to start. Could my uninstalling Office 2007 have broken something? Do I need to uninstall LibreOffice before attempting this installation? Would it be smarter to expend my rapidly depleting energies re-installing Office 2007 ... seek help with its errors if necessary? I liked Office 2000 but I'll take the easiest route to get working again.

Thanks oh so much for any help.

-G.

Office 2000 is getting pretty old now & is a security risk as MS don't supply updates or security protection any longer, so it would be best to reinstall Office 2007 again. Also you might experience problems with getting any documents & spreadsheets etc. you already have in Office 2007 to work in Office 2000.

Firstly you need to make sure that Office 2007 is completely uninstalled before you reinstall it again. To do that refer to this website.

Well I have tried installing 2007 (after completely uninstalling any lingering bits). I've tried a lot. Here's what didn't work:
-Restore. My options don't go back far enough thanks to some apparently significant window upgrades
-Tried using a different admin user.
-Tried in safe mode

I think I know what the problem is. There are two (that I know of; maybe more) registry keys that are corrupt. But they won't let me edit or delete them no matter what I do. I've tried resetting permissions. Also tried replacing those keys from a previously exported registry (where they're right). One of the keys lets me import it but still won't let me access it; the other just won't let me even do that.

I'm thinking it's time to stop playing games and re-install windows. My understanding is that a non-destructive re-install won't replace my registry; is that right?

Argh! Well maybe I'm not yet ready to do a clean install and have to start completely over. Anyway, that's where I am now.

The first thing you need to do is to back up all your documents, spreadsheets & any other files that you need to keep, so if necessary you can do a complete reinstall of Windows. Of course you will have to reinstall all you software programs as well.

In the meantime you could try a Repair Install to see if that will work. Doing this will retain your programs & files, but it would be wise to back up your files to be on the safe side. Read through this link for the Repair Install.

Okay. Finally an update. I tried registry repairs (which is what got me into the problem to start with, I think) but to no avail.

Finally, I backed up that entire partition, made emergency disks and tried the windows upgrade/reinstall. It worked! My registry was fine afterwards and there was very little I needed to do. Windows desktop appearance, naturally. Also I had to reinstall my Connectify HotSpot and re-configure my wireless adapter. No big, once I figured it out. By the way, I have that strictly to use with my Kindle Fire, here at home.

Anyway, feeling out of sorts with MS Office, I installed a trial version of Ability Office. It was okay I guess although not a lot better than LibreOffice. But it would have cost a few dollars and I kept trying to figure work arounds. Finally realized that what I really needed to do was install Office 2007 again. Which I did. I customized it less than before (don't know why exactly) but still didn't install Outlook. I suspect that's old enough that it's suspect and will be even more so when support ends for the 2007 product.

Anyway. All is wall and I thank you so much for your help and for encouraging me to try the repair install.

Best of all possible wishes.
