I agree with all the posters here who are staying with Windows 7. I have 4/5 main machines all running Windows 7 Ultimate and I need absolute stability and Windows 10 is too new and most likely unstable. I am also not best pleased about the discontinuing of Windows Media Center. They almost had me and then I lost interest. More stupid UI changes so now you have no idea where the active window went. No Aero after being asked by 10K plus insiders. So I am sticking with 7.
I am also testing 10 on 4 virtual machines over 3 PC's just to see what happens but so far it is MEH. I'll stay with the insider program but I will not use 10 on a main system. Too much selling your soul to Microsoft for nothing in return.

I am using both windows 7 & 10. I still use windows 7 more then any of my other systems. I read there was tweak that you could get Aero themes to work in windows 10, don't know if it will work when the release comes out for the consumer.

One item that will always be an issue for me is 10 not dismounting or releasing other hdd's or sdd's on shut down
I shouldn't have to disable or sacrifice fast startup just so 10 acts right or like 7 and all prior windows versions with exterior or interior drives.
If I want to remove a drive or reconnect it in another os check disk should not be activated on the other os.
This alone makes 10 potentially data killing.

Well, true somewhat. Your Windows 7 key won't be deactivated. It is just that you won't be able to use them at the same time with dual booting. If you image/backup Windows 7, then you can go back to it easily without reinstalling. This is my understanding as of current.

I believe you can go back to Win 7 after downgrading to Win 10 during the first month. After that, your key is locked into Win 10.

Hmm, Jeannie thanks for sharing. I guess all these are speculation at the moment? It won't matter to me as I will be upgrading my currently unused keys, but may be extremely important for anyone with only a single Win 7 key.

I've just built a new PC for my son and have installed one of my two remaining W7 licenses. It was SP1 but still required 160+ important update downloads. I still have error debugging effort!

My own PC has W7 and it suits me fine except for the numerous fairly recent patch Tuesday updates. Some of these can cause problems - a M$ plot?

I'll consider Windows 10 when you brave people have fully tested it but still have concerns about some paid software comparability.

That is a little concerning. I thought you could always go back. I have an image restore of windows 7 sp1 and Xubuntu. Are you saying the if I use windows 10 for more than 30 day after the 29th, I can never go back to windows 7 ever even with an image restore?

They couldn't do that with my system. My key happens to be an dell oem-slp which is used on many dell systems. Some people will upgrade to 10 and others will not upgrade to windows 10. That could really foul up some people windows 7 systems if they block the oem-slp key.

I still don't have to worry about losing a key because someone was nice enough to give me a windows 7 retail version. I am currently triple booting with windows 7, 10 and Xubuntu.

Seems nothing much has been written in stone on what to really expect from Win 10 until it comes out. Even, some features aren't scheduled to be out right away and others will be subject to change. I find it frightening.

I read that somewhere recently. MS hasn't been too informative about sneaky, little details like this. I have two unused retail versions of W7—Ultimate and Home Premium—but there is no way I would ever sacrifice them. I'm hanging onto them in case I find myself or a friend needing them.

Update. Check this article. It seems you can revert after a month but you would have to do a clean install or restore an image.

It's more than just the loss of WMC. Gadgets will also be lost (requiring the replacement of a very expensive 2.2KVA UPS), updates will be mandatory (Pro can only delay them), etc. Sorry, I just don't like the direction MS has been taking, not to mention the way they are going about it. If I wanted to be controlled that much, I would go with Apple. And, frankly, Win 10 is ugly compared to Win 7.

I'm predicting that a bunch of "Windows Update Blocker" programs will be released for W10.

Some of them might even be legitimate ...

You don't even need that... just go to services -> stop Windows Update and change startup to disabled... end of story...

I'm not certain that will work in W10 (I know it works in W7).

Even if it does work, since MS is hellbent on mandatory updates they will modify/remove the service if too many people start using it to block updates.

I think people are too fixated on the "FREE UPGRADE" part of the equation. I doubt I will upgrade any of my many licenses (both Win 7 and Win 8) but when the time comes for me to build or buy another machine, I will purchase Win 10 then.

It's not that I dislike Win 10, it's that I've never been a fan of upgrading anyway, I prefer doing a clean install of a new OS.

I'll wrap that into my Media Center statement. If something is missing that you use then I can see the downside. It's issues like this that MS relied on Insiders so much for though, if they'd had enough feedback requesting gadgets I'm sure they'd have listened and reinstated them or found an alternative.

Don't forget updates will be heavily tested by Insiders before being released to the general public. In all of my time running 7 I've only ever removed a handful of updates (one which caused issues with WMP and the GWX ones) so the probability of updates causing problems should be minimal.

And, frankly, Win 10 is ugly compared to Win 7.

Personal preference, not a fact. I used to hate the monotoned, blocky appearance of 8 but now I do really love the look of 10. Probably months of use has made it grow on me.

To me, the reason behind liking the look and feel of windows 10 is ... it is better than anything I have used previously.
I must to mention it that for the initial builds I did not like the look, but it gradually changed to a very pleasant one.

Whats the point of buying an OS for €120 if you already have one?
Somebody like me could use that money on a new CPU!

Btw, if you try Win10 for free, can you still access Win7?
