I am a reporter doing a story on people who've decided to stick with Windows 7 and not go for the Windows 10 free upgrade. If that's you, and you'd like to talk to me about it, hit me up on email at [EMAIL REMOVED] or just respond to this thread.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Yep not giving up any win-7 licenses
Doesn't mean I wouldn't use 10 I just don't believe in upgrades
I will however stay in the insiders program and use 10 for free and might buy it outright when I feel the need to use it a lot.

I'll be keeping W7 Pro on my main rig, dual booting with W10 as an Insider. I'm starting to use W10 much more than W7 now but I still love 7, and it helps having a working copy of the OS you're offering help on. W8.1 will remain as a VM.

My backup rig and laptop are both being upgraded from 7 to 10.

For sure keeping Windows 7.
I will wait for more reports on Windows 10 but will not upgrade and in danger one of my Windows 7 COA keys.

I'm staying with Win 7, probably until its EOL (End of Life, 01/14/2020), for various reasons, the biggest ones being the discontinuation of WMC (Windows Media Center) and gadgets (both of which I heavily depend on) and the new update/upgrade policy which makes all update/upgrades mandatory, which will occur at random times with only limited delays of them possible only with the Pro version.

The mandatory updates/upgrades mean if MS issues an update/upgrade that breaks existing software or hardware or makes a change to the user interface I do not like, even with Win 10 Pro, I would only be able to delay the update/upgrade for a few months after which I would be out of luck. In the past, up to Win 7, one would be assured that the OS (Operating System) would be essentially unchanged in appearance and operation for at least ten years after the release date. One also had the option to not download an update if it would cause harm to one's computer. With Win 10, changes to the appearance or user interface could happen at any time and the one would have no choice but to accept it with only a few months delay if using the Pro version (users of the Home version would get updates/upgrades immediately with no option to delay them).

Lots of good reasons above for staying with Win 7, but my own is simpler. I'm lazy! I have a system that works as I want it to and that I know pretty well, and so far I've seen no compelling reason to move to Win 10. I'll make the transition only with the purchase of a new computer in the future, far enough off, I hope, so that the OS is mature.

I just can't see switching. Win 7 is so good, I just hate to try something and not like it. I heard so many complaints about Win 8, I am glad I did not switch. Win 10 might be fine, but why chance it. One other reason is that my girlfriend is only "Moderate Computer Savvy" and she is comfortable with Win 7. The last thing I want to do is upset the woman in my life. :D

I am doing both keeping windows 7 and windows 10 and leaving the insider program. The reason I am going with 10 as well, is because someone was nice enough to provide a windows 7 retail version.

Microsoft needs to do the following for windows 10
What the 10 app limit means, I want to be able to install unlimited amount of program on one computer
Microsoft needs to fix the log in and log off sound, I can't get it to work even with registry trick.
Microsoft needs to lets you choose which weather service office you get the alerts from both the weather app and cortana.

If I didn't have the windows 7 retail version, I wouldn't get windows 10 now. The reason, windows 10 mainstream lifecycle ends in 2020 and the extended support for windows 7 also ends in 2020. So, if you are going to have to pay to upgrade you might as well wait. I would lose the dvd play back feature.

I also think the cost of reported windows 10 retail/oem disk is way to high. I was excepting to be a lot cheaper.

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.
Looks like M$ removed the iso downloads :/
https://insider.windows.com/
Last I checked the slow ring was 10164 iso
It's been more than a couple weeks since I've used it and it hung on updating some language packs an hour ago so I formatted it
Updating has been an interesting process a lot of try again later stuff throughout testing started,
The only good thing was the new iso downloads if they are gone so am I.

This pretty much sums up my feelings as well. I have Win 7 and Win 8.1 machines that I don't plan to upgrade, mostly because I don't believe in upgrades. If Win 10 was super amazing and did things that I couldn't live without, then I might consider upgrading. It isn't amazing so I don't feel compelled to upgrade. It's a decent OS but so are Win 7 and Win 8.1.

I'll eventually move to Win 10 when I buy or build new machines. Until then, I'll stick with whatever OS is already on my machines.

so strollin why not move from 8.1 to 10? Most people see 8.1 as a failure. Personally, I think 8 and 8.1 were the best Windows desktops yet. The problem for me is how modern UI apps operate in that environment something Windows 10 improves upon. That's why I am switching when the upgrade rolls out.

I recently bought a new computer with Win7 Pro. I already had a Win 7 Premium machine. I wanted another computer for a while to retire and old XP but I didn't want 8.1 or 10.

I won't be moving to 10 right now, perhaps not at all. I have a 5 GB cap on a 1 to 3 mbps connection and it would pretty much eat up my allotment for a month just for the upgrade on one and another month for the second one. I'm not seeing anything in Win 10 that I need.

My main reason though is the no choice update policy. I install critical updates right away but delay the others for two reasons. The main one being the cap. I want to chose when the updates are downloaded not when MS says I have to take them. Updates could very easily put me over my cap and cost me a lot of money ($0.45 per MB). The second reason is the update could be a bad one and then I'm stuck with a brick and possibly both systems could become bricks. As it is I update one at a time reserving the other to look up why the updated computer has issues.

The third, I don't know how MS intends to deal with HP systems which could be an issue. MS has recommended updates to my system which, had I done them, would have crashed it.

The fourth, things on Win 10 seems to be pointing to the cloud and thus a need of a high speed connection to be of use. At the moment that is not in my future.

I will not say I will never move to 10 but a lot of things have to change with my connection status and Win 10 will have to prove itself reliable as well as provide something worth the effort.

Another factor is that I will be pretty close to 76 years old when EOL for Win 7 rolls around. If I can still remember how to turn a computer on and why I did, maybe I'll consider a update.

Staying with Windows 7. I'll run a VM of 10 in dual boot mode.

Love Windows 7, dislike Windows 8, 8.1, Windows 10 is OK.

The Start menu in Windows 7 works the way I want. I turned off the pin recent program and then PIN the 15ish programs I use. I PIN all my Browsers to the task bar with my 3 most used programs. The Start menu in 10 place everything to the side that you PIN, I dislike that.

The forced updates... as we have seen MS has had issues with updates. I like to choose when to install.

Loki

PS it is still flat and ugly... I've seen better graphics from 3rd graders...

Just a humdrum little system.
Will wait until the Windows 10 free upgrade offer is due to expire (after 12 months) before making a decision on giving up my Windows 7 license. I certainly don't wish to swap 7 for 10 any time soon as there are bound to be quite a few bugs that will need ironing out. Like others here I'm probably more likely to purchase Windows 10 rather than upgrade.

Keeping 7 here, but will be putting 10 on a seperate drive.

Might do the same the with Windows 10 on a separate drive, not dual booting. A switch power button.

Softwares/Drivers for Windows 10 appear to popping up but some remains with bugs so not in a hurry!

so strollin why not move from 8.1 to 10? Most people see 8.1 as a failure. Personally, I think 8 and 8.1 were the best Windows desktops yet. The problem for me is how modern UI apps operate in that environment something Windows 10 improves upon. That's why I am switching when the upgrade rolls out.
I already explained that I don't see anything in Win 10 that would compel me to upgrade from either Win 7 or 8.1. I have no issues with Win 8.1 so am in no rush to upgrade.

Questions I think one should ask.
These are the question I ask myself.

1. What will Windows 10 do that Windows 7 won't do?
2. What options does Windows 10 have that Windows 7 doesn't have?
3. Does one want or need those added options?
4. What user control does one loose with Windows 10 such as Windows Updates; maybe more.
5. Does one have the reasonable internet that will allow downloading Windows 10.
6. Can one buy Windows 10 DVD from Microsoft through a legal Retailer?
7. Forget the free version. Is Windows 10 worth buying?
