How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

Anyone has the hidden C:\$Windows.~WS folder that holds the installer for both 32 and 64 bit Windows 10? I downloaded both Home and Pro version 32-64bit ISOs with the download tool last night, wonder if it was created then or auto-downloaded. I have not reserved with this PC, and had 3 updates not installed.

I have that folder in Windows 7 too, but it said BT at the end and not WS. However Windows 10 was reserved. But it didn't say the upgrade was ready yet even though it was downloaded. And yes Windows auto downloaded it!

If you used the media creation tool then that's the folder it gets downloaded to. Haven't installed 10 myself but did use the tool to download the ISO's. You can delete that folder when it's finished.

Lee, thanks for clearing that up. I will delete it right away, as I got the ISOs already anyway. I will download the Turkish ones too in a day (100GB download limit at 97GB at the moment, don't want to drop to 3Mbps :p)

Reboot, then try again. From seeing your screen shots, it looks like windows update is updating itself.

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.
So I changed the Action Center Settings for Windows Update on to make the Update reappear, after restart it is still there. Twice I selected "Let me choose" & it did nothing.
As soon I selected "Install updates automatically" it cleared :0(

Went back to sys&sec\Windows Update\Change Settings & put all back to normal. "Microsoft Update" (in settings) gave me some grief tho

Just a spate of threads lately to turn off auto Updates due to paranoia about 10 sneak upgrading which is plain whacked.

This is perilous on an OS with no SP2 which relies on frequent patching to keep compatible, secure and perform well

Greg Rocker, Did you notice even Microsoft recommend not installing the 30x update if you are not going to update to windows 10. I read some of the optional update that relate to windows 10, was actually put in the important not the optional part of windows update.

telemetry data was also added to windows 7. However, if consumer experience is disabled, that might be disabled as well. Microsoft not clear on things.

On windows 10. I have a a privacy concern on what type telemetry data they collect aside from what related to app/program purchase and Microsoft log-ins. Again Microsoft not being clear. I really don't like Microsoft knowing ever website I visit with Firefox on windows 10. I don't want to have my login password info to other sites like banking and Amazon that none of their business. At least Ubuntu on shared searches with Amazon but their mistake was not telling people about and how to disable it. That why Linux Mint and other flavors of Ubuntu came about.

They have a billion customers so any telemetry is focused not on individuals but the trends of exobytes

Your personal privacy concerns are almost always addressed with a rigor that has surprised me. It's amazing they can create like they do with all the privacy strictures they impose.

I personally hope they got all the data they need to assure successful free Upgrades of hundreds of millions of customers going on now.

I was impressed with a personal answer today from Ten Team in MVP channel that 7 license will be always retrievable, and again these Upgrades are on the honor system for not using 7/8 once 10 is installed, unless you want to abandon 10 which also still remains there to go back to.

That hardly sounds nefarious. In fact it's quite generous and means you can go back and forth.

You feel that way because you've been lucky enough to not be affected by the updates in the past year or so that did cause problems (and, if you deny that they exist, you need to pull your head of the sand). Many people, such as me, like to make sure that we don't get burned by a faulty update by waiting a week before downloading and installing them. Many of us don't want Bing or Skype installed on our computers.

Win 10 takes that away from us. Home users get stuck with all updates, period. Pro users can delay them only 8 months. We are now subject to a situation where we can be using a configuration, then subject to a drastic change we will eventually be forced to take, much like win 8.0 users were forced to eventually take 8.1, whether it was liked or not (there were many people who actually preferred Win 8.0 over Win 8.1). Gone are the days when one could by a Windows version and expect it to stay pretty much unchanged for ten years after the release date. With win 10, we are getting a pig in a poke.

Thank you Lady Fitzgerald you just reminded me of an update that was important but later it was optional. Skype.

Also, nvidia driver is having issue with windows 10. See the windows update keep installing an old nvidia driver but nvidia driver keep updating to a newer version. In fact it cause Microsoft to release a tool to prevent windows update from re-installing bad updates.

Last I heard, Netgear routers and modems weren't working with Win 10 due to driver issues. all to often, it takes manufacturers of hardware and software to catch up with drivers, etc. If that was the only issue, the obvious solution would be to just delay moving to the new OS until the problems had time to sort out.

I don't think the release was timed correctly. I think Microsoft should of have service packs for windows 7 and windows 8.1. Maybe had a release two years before windows 7 sp extended support ended.

I read that the dvd app your purchase, may not work. I read a review on that. I am still mixed on using 10. If Microsoft is collecting data they shouldn't be I won't like that. I wish EFF would really look into what data they collect. That why I never installed the telemetry updates in windows 7.

They also have ads for just playing Microsoft Solitaire, that plain dumb and might be a little annoying. You pay not to see the adds for $1.xx a month.

Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the person who gave me the windows 7 retail version, so that I could keep my triple boot as noted on the side. My 16 bit software is working with windows 10 but don't know if that worth the privacy that maybe lost. I really like my 16 bit program working. I consider that a major plus.

Regardless of all those issues. My main issue is Microsoft not being clear. Sometime it needs to be in laymen terms very simple.

Regardless of all those issues. My main issue is Microsoft not being clear. Sometime it needs to be in laymen terms very simple.

I never intended to install 10 until around January, so I've been running 10 in virtualbox to test it out. I have to say, so far, nothing has made me want to upgrade on my retail 7 Pro machine. I know there is still a huge amount of bugs to work out, but I also found the UI boring and ugly. Most of the new features that are supposed to make the OS stand out, I've turned off. I'm not interested in mobile/touch apps on a desktop, not interested in cortana, I don't use bing or sign in with a Microsoft account. I don't want to share my wifi passwords or have Microsoft use my bandwidth for sharing Windows updates. It annoys me that features like that are turned on by default. They should be opt-in not opt-out!
Other than the improved security, it hasn't won me over... Yet!

Definitely won't be installing any of those 10 updates on my 7 machine yet. Will see what the OS is like next year. Until then, I'll stick with my trusty 7.

Lady, to clarify I was was referring to the particular strain of paranoia that MS intends to force Windows 10 on consumers without the right to reclaim Win7 at all. What was made clear and is now a buzzing topic in MVP Communications channel is that one can retrieve their Win7 license at any time because it not only doesn't go away, but upgrading to Windows 10 doesn't even affect the 7 license except not to use both on the honor system. I even thought they had more tricks up their sleeves for 10 BIOS activation but now it appears these are no more onerous than for XP/Vista to 7. You can go home again, forever.

As to your privacy concerns, I understand how consumers will all have varying comfort levels with how much they give up. I was only trying to emphasize that from what I've witnessed personally in meetings and in general, it is surprising that they get as much done as they do with all the protections MS insists upon for consumer rights and privacy. By comparison Google is purely a spying operation.

Yea I mostly believe all of the terms... apply to "If" a user uses a M$ account as login
The system requirements I've read on Newegg for win-10 sells is listed "a M$ account is required",
Also hopping that a local account creation during install is still there slightly hidden of course as it's always been during clean installs during testing iso builds :/
But this is all guess work until confirmed
Problem is it costs 140.us to test the theory and it's a consumable product nonrefundable :p
