Windows 7 - genuine or cracked? MSDN or other?

Hi,

Just looking if my Windows 7 is genuine or not, and assuming it is (I really think it is), is it a MSDNAAA copy or not? In short, I want to know if I can safely update to Windows 10 and get an all-time valid Windows 10 licence for my desktop (and if I will be able to do clean installs after that, I format my desktop mostly every year).

It's a Volume License - and as far as I am aware doesn't qualify for the free upgrade.

The Office 2007 install is definitely counterfeit - it's based on a Blocked Volume License Key.

According to appwiz.cpl, my Windows installation is dated from December 30, 2012. That's 3 years ago. I was still in the MSDNAAA program at that moment, so I don't see any reason why the Windows would be counterfeit or anything, I'm pretty sure it's legit, but I don't know for sure if it can be upgraded and this is why I'm here.

It's a Volume License - and as far as I am aware doesn't qualify for the free upgrade.

The Office 2007 install is definitely counterfeit - it's based on a Blocked Volume License Key.

Already knew about Office 2007 since it never was on the MSDNAAA program (Visual Studio was) and I never bought any Office product.

If volume licences don't qualify for free upgrades, why do I have the W10 icon saying otherwise, telling me that my computer is ready to be updated and does qualify for the free upgrade with an already reserved copy of W10? Is that some sort of joke?

It may be that if it's an MSDNAA copy, it falls into different rules. the various MSDN-type licenses always have different rules to either normal Volume or Retail products.

And how do I know if my specific licence can be upgraded or not? I've seen the W10 icon even on counterfeit W7 installations, so how do I know if I will have problems or not in the future?

Assuming it's a license from the MSDNAAA program, I'm better reinstalling W7 if W10 asks for a new licence in 3 months. You get the idea...

As far as I know all windows 10 upgrades are perpetual once activated.

I tried with a counterfeit version in a virtual machine and W10 did activate correctly, but once I tried to reset it, it would say that it couldn't activate.

I read that Microsoft does let counterfeit versions upgrade to W10 but the activation is still counterfeit, so Microsoft could still decide one day to shut the activation down for these users. And not be able to reset/reinstall Windows obviously sucks.

Obviously, MSDNAAA licenses are totally legit, and I want to be sure that it will work, activate, and that I will be able to active it again on the same computer using the upgraded licence in the future (like I'm already able to do with my laptop).

From what I see, it doesn't seem that anybody knows if it will work or not, so I will have to test it and risk having to go back to W7 if it stops working in the future.

Virtual machines are a whole different ballgame.
Chances are that the reset failed because of hardware conflicts since effectively all (e.g.) Virtualbox vms are the same machine .
Results on nare metal may differ.

Are you suggesting that counterfeit licences should activate just fine?

I tried on metal too, believe me I had problems when the licence was counterfeited.

If you think I will get the same kind of problems by upgrading my MSDNAAA licence, I won't upgrade. But as I've said, it doesn't look like anybody knows if it works or not, so my best bet will be to try it... which kinda sucks since it's my main desktop and I hate having to reinstall everything if it's only to find out that I have to rewind back to W7 a couple of weeks later.

If you have no base license of your own apart from the 'MSDNAA' one - then you should ignore the upgrade.
