Microsoft republishes KB3035583 (Get Win X App)

Here's how disgusted I've become: I'm seriously considering going back to Vista. It still has a year and a half of life in it. By then I'll be a Linux Ninja. And MS is not likely to put "Get Windows 10" on Vista. there aren't enough people using it. XP now, I wouldn't be surprised. I don't get it. They already have a virtual monopoly on operating systems. Isn't it enough?

I wouldn't go back to Vista, that's a bit of a step backwards. :D

I've decided that if one more of these 10 (or telemetry) updates gets reissued, then I'm turning off Windows Update completely. I'll check maybe once every 6 months. I've been using computers since Windows '95 and not had a single virus or been hacked (at least, not that I'm aware of), so I hardly think putting off a security update for 6 months is going to make a lot of difference.

I have various layers of security (Anti-virus, Firewall, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, SpywareBlaster, Cryptoprevent) so I'm sure my pc will be quite safe. And it's 6 months of not having to go check every update to see what's included.

Just getting bored of playing cat and mouse with these updates now. Didn't mind at first but it's getting annoying now.

Then when 2020 hits it looks like I'll be switching over to Linux Mint or Zorin. Cinnamon is looking the likely contender at the moment though.

All one really needs to do is uncheck the optional software box in the update settings not turn off all updates ;)
http://www.sevenforums.com/news/382...es-kb3035583-get-win-x-app-2.html#post3157640

Don't get me wrong Thrash, I'm not advising everyone turn off Windows Updates. That's just what I intend to do. It's probably a tad extreme, but it's one less thing to have to keep checking.
The way MS has been handling updates lately, I wouldn't be surprised if some of these updates got switched to important. How many of the 10/telemetry updates have we seen which have switched from optional to recommended?
And also, some people are saying that some of these updates (like the get windows 10 app) have been auto-installed even when it's set to only check for updates.
Now, I'm not sure how true that is, as it certainly hasn't happened to me. And if it ever did, I'd be mightily cheesed off. That would be an extremely low move on Microsoft's part.

As I say, that's just what I intend to do and I certainly wouldn't recommend it for everyone. I hardly think I'm putting myself at any major risk though. And if I do, then on my own head be it. :D

Anyway, I have plenty of system images and file backups (both on-site and off) to get me out of any issues that might occur.

I'm like Maverick in Top Gun, I like to live dangerously! Except, I can't fly a jet... and I'm not as handsome... and I don't have his money and... Oh, you get the point anyway! :D

This GWX update is behaving like malicious mailbox spam. As with your mailbox, the junkmail folder is for the stuff you need to scrutinize or ignore and your inbox is for the mail senders you trust - in that way you have a level of protection. Windows Update in a way is setup the same way, Important and Optional. The expectation is that a potentially harmful payload will not be installed on your system, be it an unwanted email payload or in this case an optional update. Unfortunately KB3035583 which has a hefty 'drive-by' payload has gone from blocked spam (a hidden optional update) to the inbox (important update). This is a very deceptive and disreputable move by MS. Turning off WU totally is not the answer. Windows Update 'Notify, but let me chose' is still a setup option in W7, even though vigilance is no longer optional.

Heck, I'd pay 50.00 or more for a Linux OS that is as user-friendly as Windows.

You can donate anything you like,
But Zorin ultimate is 15.us +- ;)

I wish it was Debian based. I tried Mint, Debian 7 etc. in VMs but I can't find the Glass I had on Vista and Windows 7. Maybe I will try Zorin on a VM. When I can get a desktop machine set up again I'm going to put W7 Pro on and wait until the retro styling shock wears off. :)

I think there was one thing I liked about W8 and later. But I can't think of it at the moment. :)

Zorin actually IS Debian based, but indirectly. Zorin is based on Ubuntu, which in turn is based on Debian. Zorin is nice, I've used 9.1 for some time, but at the moment I have a slight preference for Debian with Cinnamon. But both are good...

Total lunacy ? I don't think so , not on our part , total lunacy is what MS is doing with this update from hell , now thats total lunacy . Did you read post # 54 above , the dang thing came back after being hidden , this is worthy of a nuclear confrontation imo .

"Glass" as in the Aero Glass theme? If so, do some searching. For example, with Mint there are numerous aero/glass themes available.
