Solved KB3035583 Reappeared After Being Hidden

From what I can remember the admin identified a code line reading

KickoffDownload    REG_DWORD/    0x1

as being responsible for Windows 10 trying to download/install. After changing this via Command Promp Windows 10 stopped trying to download.

I'm not sure if I'll attempt the above changes but will keep them in mind if I decide to as I'm not comfortable with registry editing.

go to Local Computer Policy -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Windows Components -> Windows Update.
Look up "Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update".

Apparently, enabling this policy will prevent future upgrade offers. Whether or not this means that you will not receive the updates related to the upgrade remains to be seen.

Ok, rant time (and I'm not specifically picking on unifex since this is a common help issue).

Posts like this drive me insane because the poster has assumed the reader will know certain things. In this case, I was looking in "Search programs and files" for Local Computer Policy and I couldn't find squat until it dawned on me that "Group Policy" was the first part of the file path given (on my computer, it was actually listed as "Edit group policy" but, at least, "Group Policy" in the search box still found it). Then I ran into another problem with the file path: there are two headings—"Computer Configuration" and User Configuration"—with "Administrative Templates" in them. Both contain separate folders for "System" and "Windows Components". Unlike the file path above, neither of the "System" folders had "Windows Components" in them.

I checked both "Windows Components" folders and found "Windows Updates" in each one but neither had "Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update" in them. At that point I said...well, never mind what I said; I just gave up.

People, PLEASE! When giving directions, give complete, accurate, detailed directions; do NOT assume the reader knows anything, no matter how obvious it may seem to you. I'm fairly knowledgeable around computers but that doesn't mean I don't have holes in that knowledge (based on the number of holes I have in my knowledge, I'm "holier" than the Pope!). One of the most frustrating things I deal with on many fora is trying to get geeks to give me simple, accurate, complete directions on how to do something. Invariably, a step gets left out or a step will say something like "format the framis" but not tell me how to format the flamin' framis. When I point that out, I almost always get responses such as "I thought everyone knew that", "you should have known that", or the really classic one, "If you don't know that, you shouldn't be messing around with computers).

I figured out how to get into it (using search is simpler than trying to remember a command). My complaint is the post didn't specify how to get there, instead assuming everyone would already know. In addition, the file path given in the directions is faulty.

Yesterday I received a bunch of updates for W7.
With those came updates that were recently hidden.
KB3035583 was one of those and I hid it again.
But there were also other files that seem to be doing the same thing, forcing W10 to be installed.
I noticed that only after they had installed.

Now I understand that these are new versions of the same update, forcing W7 users to upgrade to W10.

After installing those remaining updates all access to files on my C: drive was blocked!
Access denied!

Only after doing a system restore, with which all updates were rolled back, I was able to get into my files again.

So now I am wondering if this happened as a cause of me hiding the W 10 upgrade or was there any other cause, I did not install anything myself for quite some time so this must have been caused by one of the new updates, but how to find out which one??

I think what MS is doing here is very annoying and wrong to say the least.
After they let Windows XP die, I was forced to buy a new W7 and now they are forcing a new version onto me of which I clearly stated that I do not want, even for free.

Seems MS has completely gone demagogic!!!

They want to take over our PCs completely and there seems to be no way to let them know that WE don't want that to happen.

It is my PC and I paid for it and the stuff that is running on there!

I think there should be more solid protests against what MS is doing to our PCs!!!

I did not see where that Forbes article mentioned MS "forcing W10 to be installed" or "forcing W7 users to upgrade to W10". MS downloaded about 6GB of W10 installation files - even if you did not want them - even if you had to pay for the bandwidth. That was pretty dumb on MS's part, but MS did not automatically update the OS to W10.

I have no idea why your file access changed.

Afterwards, run Windows Disk Cleanup utilitiy, it will take a little time.
During closedown and next startup -- Windows will finish cleanup of the removed KBs and related files.
Repelling this Telemetry invasion will be an ongoing process, from WU vigilance [hiding KBs] to doing the above maybe once monthly.

I can no longer hide these updates on my W7 Machine. The ones I hid before no longer appear in the restore list. Now my W8.1 laptop will no longer allow me to hide them either...

I just now noticed this. Please tell me more -- I'd like to learn how the problem acts on your computers; perhaps we all can cough up a solution or two after we hunt down the cause.

It says in the headline: Microsoft Forces Windows 10 Onto Windows 7 And Windows 8!
It also is quite remarkable that MicroSoft confirms this as being "their new policy"!

Please to let me know if there is anybody out there having the same problems I had after yesterdays' patches, not being able to access the files on my C: drive.
The drive itself was visible and showed all directories, but it wasn't possible to access the files.

I am very curious as to what has caused this problem to occur.

I had been free of this nightmare until shutting down last night. Damned MS forced something through even though I had chosen to let me decide. I go to shut down last night and 9 updates run through. I'm pissed. I had not seen win10 update since June and bang I'm right back there again.

Frustrated is the mild word for it. Obviously, we have a failure to communicate.

OK, I followed the directions in your Word doc to get to Local Group Policy Editor. Here is what I got:



The next step is to go to Administrative Templates. Which one? I have two of the *&^%$#@! things and your directions don't tell me which one to go to.
