Hi Finnian.. Welcome to the forums!

You always install the older OS first (XP) then Windows 7..When you install 7, be sure to install Windows 7 on a different partition/drive... I hope this helps..

One thing you can try is to insert the Windows 7 install disk and boot rather than the install option choose to repair the OS.

In this menu choose the startup repair this should hopefully see the Windows 7 install and restore it - it should also see the XP system and create a dual boot

really lots more info is needed.
1. is the 226 GB Unallocated space where you have Win 7 installed.?
2. what format are you using XP on. Fat, Fat32, NTFS.
Can you detail exactly how you installed XP after you had installed Win7.

No Trouble if you can answer the above Question?
the more exact the better.

Can you give us a snip (pic) of Disk Management?

Check this sticky: Questions to use for help with Installation Issues and try to give us as much information as possible.

The better we understand exactly what's happened up to this point, the more we can help you.

You probably won't like my answer, but if a friend came to me in this situation, this is what I'd do;

I'd back up all the user data on the system and wipe the drive(s) clean. I'd install Windows 7 natively, and if he needed Windows 7 for some reason, I'd either install XP Mode, or VirtualPC/VirtualBox and run XP there.

If you weren't sure how to set up a dual-boot system, or how to fix it, then go with a simpler, easier, effective solution. Chances are, your time with XP is limited anyway, so why over-complicate the removal process?

I agree. Working out dual boot issues is about 6-10 months ago for me. I gradually dropped XP off of all my machines. Clean install Win7 and enjoy the greatest invention since the computer!

Provided your second partition was made cleanly and successfully, you can retry the W7 install on it.

But first i would format this new partition good (go NTFS).

Note: you will need the Xp partition (original OS) and the new partition to be both Primary and active.

OK, hey techys read his original post... again. note bold text.
1. he put Win7 on D:
2. he put XP on D:
THAT EQUALS TWO OS'S ON THE SAME PARTITION. D:
The only way to correct this is FORMAT the WHOLE MESS.
He only has XP which will operate.

Wonder what he has on C:

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
