M$ is going to end up having us all subscribing w/monthly/annual fees applied to individual apps/services by 2020 and they will all go home to count the cash which they will receive from our monthly payments. Not much different from what is now common for anyone watching television, unless you have excellent over the air digital content in your neck of the woods.

That's the way I see things, they are changing the format of the actual outlook.com service which then requires a corresponding change to WLM itself

There's no such thing as a WLM 2011 account. WLM 2011 is an email client program used for accessing whatever account you set it up to access.

It matters which email address you have as to whether the WLM client will be able to access the email server associated with that address.

My other query is this: If I switch to say Thunderbird, can/should I uninstall WLM or is it buried integrally in the operating system like IE and simply best left alone?
Yes, you can uninstall WLM if you decide to stop using it. It's always been a separate download and didn't come with the OS.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
Too bad we do not know what the actual date is when MS is going to implement the change that will render WLM unusable if KB3093594 is not applied. The email states "in a few weeks", so that could be 2 weeks or 3 weeks. We can only guess.

With such a short lead time, it does not give MS much time to fix the problems that many users are having with KB3093594. MS is not going to put any more effort into supporting WLM users (though in the millions) beyond this update. The 2016 focus is their email offering in W10. Outlook is migrating to the new Preview in 2016. Like it or not, it is a business decision.

It would be a good idea to make a copy of WLM folders and address book/contacts now, as a precaution. That is if you are not going to apply the update. The consequences are clear in the email, though nothing much else is.

Thanks for the information on removing WLM.

I realise WLM isn't an account, my poor choice of words.

The immediate question for me, I guess, is whether I am ok to stick with WLM 2011 or need to upgrade to WLM 2012 in which case would it be better to switch to Thunderbird? If I do upgrade to WLM 2012 I would not appear to need KB3093594 as I will only use it for my ISP email account.

I converted to Thunderbird awhile ago, as I use Linux almost exclusively these days. It works fine, but Mozilla announced recently that they will stop supporting it soon. It's unclear what its fate will be at that point. We may need to be considering other desktop clients.

One option is the totally free Thunderbird, The companion application to the Firefox browser, which is fully compliant with both POP3 and IMAP email systems and will import WLM emails.

It will do everything that WLM will do but lots more too

Learn Thunderbird

Thought I would follow this but it calls for me to do the following:
To find the location of the email files in Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail, go to Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder.
In Windows Live Mail I haven't got "Tools" showing. Where have I gone wrong?

Given the comment above that support for Thunderbird is going to be ending soon, are there any other third party email clients that people would recommend?

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
I am having no end of trouble with the instructions for Thunderbird. I now get this
In Thunderbird, go to Tools | ImportExport | Import all messages from a directory | Also from its subdirectories.
but there is no "Tools" item that I can see?

I've been doing a little light investigating, regarding Thunderbird support, the only thing I can find regarding support is a change in the way that Thunderbird is financed and the changes to the legal framework to allow donations to support future development rather than relying on "handouts from the Firefox project".

Indeed the latest blog announces the timeline for the next release in March 2016
