Another no longer genuine - Help.

Hi All,

I've been away for approx 3 months so i finally turned my PC on and let it do all its updates and when i restarted it i have a notification on my desktop stating that my copy of Windows is not genuine.

I cant run the Windows Activation application as i get the following error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Your problem is you have a OEM/SLP COA key that was installed on a Asus system from the factory.
You have it installed on a After Market Asus motherboard.(Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe)

That make the installation counterfeit.

A OEM/SLP or OEM Builders COA key can only be used on the first motherboard it was installed on and activated.

Im not sure how that is possible as i made this PC from scratch with only one copy of Windows 7 which was bought at the same time as the parts for the PC.

Is there a way i can turn it back in to a Genuine copy?

The copy of Windows 7 you bought should of come with a proper COA key and a Microsoft sticker that shows the COA key. Use that key.
Where did you buy Windows 7 from?

The sticker should look something like this.

If you have the sticker on the computer how did you end up with a OEM/SLP key installed?
Do you have the Microsoft DVD for Windows 7 Pro/64 also?

I dont have a sticker on the computer its on the DVD Case that Windows 7 came in.

Things are not adding up.
You say you have the Microsoft DVD and the Microsoft Sticker that came with the
the DVD any yet your log shows OEM/SLP on a retail motherboard.

Two ways to solve this problem that I recommend is.

Repair Install or a Clean Install using the Microsoft made DVD and the key that came with it. Their are many counterfeit Windows 7 being sold. People buy them and don't know they are counterfeit. Windows 7 Pro should cost around $140.00 U.S.

I asked before and I will ask again. Where did you get the Microsoft DVD and Sticker from?

If you look at the photo thats the OEM copy i purchased. The bottom right green square is the product key on the other side of the case.

You are correct Derek. I had a brain fart and didn't think of it.
But it would not explain how a OEM/SLP got installed.
It also leaves me to wonder because of the OEM/SLP, is the rest of Windows 7 install proper and correct and not defective in some way.

Your screenshot shows the disclaimer for a >>System Builder OEM <<
and the key above is for factory built models, (Asus in this case).

Take it back to the retailer demand a refund and tell them your gonna notify MS and your local trading standards that he's selling pirated versions.

If you inform ms YOU MIGHT get lucky, no guarentee.

Yes, counterfeiters are very good at what they do.

Many honest people get caught in the trap.

We had a computer store in the place I live using counterfeit and was caught and prosecuted.
The dumb ass installed them on government computers also. That is how he got caught.
